Is Playing Blitz That Bad?

my experience in blitz is “lol 10 min”

(and even this time was way too fast)

i started playing a lot more 10 min recently- mainly to “just play” as i am taking my 30 min games to “most critical”

i tilted and raged got destroyed and destroyed; i even played all night on saturday (never done that before)

i came out realizing i need to be careful at certain points in openings- maintain attention over various squares and not concede a bunch of “minor” issues only to have it snowball out of control

in my 30 min games i have had a string of white games- so my black games have not gotten any workouts- blitz alleviated this

i got a lot of “crazy” out of my system and can use “lol 10 min” to satisfy the itch

i even played some 5+3 on another site when chess.com crashed for a few minutes

the 10 min blitz has helped my time management too- which was always an issue for me in 30 min games

now- i still believe that,in my case, longer games (otb rated classical) are the route to improvement but blitz has its place i think

It's possible to play high quality 3|0 games here is one of mine(I was white):

Blitz doesn't require much calculations. If you play blitz a lot, I think, you'll get used to not calculating much in slower time control. And I think, that's what the masters mean.

In the blitz game above, I out calculated my opponent.

Seeing that this topic will never go away, and will be argued over til the end of time.  Let me add my .02 to this.

"Is Playing Blitz That Bad?"

Depends.  Yea i know...a very vague answer.  But i say "depends" because i do think it does depend on what someone wants to get out of chess.

If someone plays strictly for the fun of it?  It doesn't matter.

If someone has gotten to where they want to be rating wise?  It doesn't matter.

If some like a titled player plays a lot of speed chess?  It doesn't matter since they have accomplished what they set out to do.

If someone is new to chess, and trying to improve as much as they can?  Then i think speed chess instills bad habits.  Like anything in life, its all about moderation.  A little speed chess here and there wont hurt.

You do come across non mainline moves or unusual openings to eat into your time. But it is good to know how to deal with these. The problem I have is running out of time in the endgame - if I have played well enough to get that far.

It's a sad reality for blitz and bullet. You usually have time for the opening and middlegame phases but not the endgame phase, especially in non incremental games.

Not for me! At move 60, I typically have ~1 minute left in 3|0 games.

I have a really bad puzzle rush score for my tactics rating(My tactics rating is in the low 2500s.)

KingKev52

I have been doing the puzzle rush but struggled with the time until I realised you can change that and just keep playing till 3 mistakes.

I think you will tend to get lazy in calculating if you play too many consecutive 3 min games.

mills_27

I like to take my time, so I don't play it all the time. I like king of the hill, regular and 3-check. what about you guys?

RuffledFlyer

I like playing Blitz

Nice

TeacherOfPain

Blitz is fun and blitz is a great time control to outline one's strength, I play 10 minute blitz and it is good.

I usually have good games in that time control and a lot can be learned in that time control, honestly there is no need for 15/10 unless you want to become better and learn, that is when I would switch over to 15/10 or longer time controls.

Honestly both Rapid And Blitz are good to me, I just like blitz better.

Blitz is ten minutes which is fine, on the other hand bullet/1 minute is bad
TeacherOfPain

Just depends on what you are going for and how you feel to determine which time control is best for someone.

shivam2627

to really improve you have to play longer time format games in which you will try to execute what u had learned from tactics, lessons, videos...no matter what but i think 10 will never improve your game, i play longer games in other sites but shorter (10min) here to be in touch and to be in comfort in every time format

This might be of some interest.
