Is playing 2D chess ( like playing chess online, solve tactics puzzles on a  book ) affects our play on real board--3D ( probably tournament )???

cause i THINK i tend to have a better visualization ( easier to spot tactics ) when i play 2D chess, cause the whole board is flat, all the pieces, weak squares are clearly shown....

so DOES playing 2D chess for a long time affect our tournament play?? should i have to place a REAL BOARD infront me so that i can follow and think the move on a real board when playing live chess in chess.com??

If you go a long time without playing on a 3d board, and do a lot of work on 2d board, then I think it can affect your play until you get used to it again.  It may only take a few days to get used to it again... or maybe a month... just depending on how experienced you are and how long your break was from 3d.

I also speculate that the stronger the player is, the less the switch would affect them... because calculation is done in the head anyway, and the board becomes more of an intermittent reference point.

when playing 2D, I sometimes miss horizontal moves especially in ranks 3-6. And diagonal moves (like Qd1-h5 or Qd1-a4) are not so easy to view to me. But in 3D I have a better view of my game. I can feel the pieces and the board

Hehe, thanks.  There are certainly frequent posters on the forums better than me though :)

I always solve puzzles from a book page or on the computer screen.

When I first started playing chess though, it was a few years before I played anyone on the 3d board, and I definitely noticed a difference and played worse until I got used to it.

Some older players on here who only played in tournaments or at clubs have said that adjusting to 2d chess online gave them difficulties until they got used to it too.

For me personally, even when I'm playing a game online (2D), I set up the same game on a real board.  I feel like I can see the game a lot better than just playing through my iPhone or computer screen.

I live in a place where I haven't really come across too many chess players that I can play face to face with, so just that feeling of being able to actually use the pieces is a big thing for me too.

I play primarily online.  Today I played OTB and my board vision was terrible.  Unlike a computer screen, I wasn't able to see the entire board unless I would move my eyes back and forth. It requires different skill to play 3D.
