Is premium worth it?

Hi! I recently joined up on chess.com and really enjoy it. I was thinking of becoming a premium member. I strictly play on my cell phone and wanted to know if someone who has tried the premium on a cell phone could tell me how getting the premium would be beneficial to me. I know you get the videos and tactics, that's great, but it fails to mention any of the other things.

If you use the sight a lot and want to get better then it is perfect. If you are not interested in the videos (my favorite) then just get the platinum membership.

It's worth it just for videos imo.

If you like chess videos, the diamond is worth it.

Otherwise, platinum is a pretty good deal at $50/year.

I'm a big Chess Mentor fan myself.  If you can get those on your phone, I'd say it's totally worth it.   Alas I don't own a smartphone so I don't know what the experience is on anything but the PC.

really appreciate the feedback. I thought it through, and yes I feel it's worth it. I'm really into chess and would really enjoy the perks, but I'm not making an excuse by saying that I have way too many expenses this month. It's sad that I can't afford a meager 15 dollars, but I really can't. It's sad because I know I would enjoy the videos. I could also become more involved in the community. I've heard about chess mentor. That is one of the things I looked for. The upgrade page on my phone does not have it listed, so I wondered if it's available on phones. Maybe next month I will get it. Consider it done.

I guess it's just me, but I could never get into chess mentor. Then again, I don't even like chess books.

Are the videos good? I've been thinking of doing the diamond.

Of course there's unlimited free tactics at chesstempo and that site does work on android but the interface here is much nicer. Just be sure you're on wifi; the tactics here sucks bandwidth like nothing else.

I was a diamond member for two years, and I just recently signed up for a third. It's a fantastic value--if you watch the videos. I had to admit to myslf, though, that I almost never watched the videos (even though they're great), and so I was tossing $50 per year in the gutter. So two weeks ago I applied my $99 to a platinum membership, and now I don't expire until 12/16. (My MEMBERSHIP doesn't expire. When I'M due to expire I have no idea).

Anyway, platinum is perfect for me. I get 5 new chess mentor lessons per day and I can review any that I've previously taken to my heart's content. There are no videos, but YouTube has about a gazillion of them, so I'm OK there.

If you don't have the $$ for diamond, certainly spring for platinum. You'll be glad you did.

(Oh, I see you already have platinum. Never mind). Smile

There are good videos on youtube... but also a lot of bad ones.  And most are not by titled players and not on a specific subjects.

IMO chess.com has the best videos and I agree it's a great value for all that you're getting.

Convenience is valuable, and besides the video series are better than elsewhere. Mine was a prize anyway.

They say, "you get what you pay for".

I agree. I just got cheap curtains along with some expensive curtains from the interwebz. Guess what. I'm keeping the expensive ones but returning the cheap ones for even more expensive ones. Good curtains == good money.

I also bought some metal ceiling spotlights from Philips, costed 3x as much as cheap ones. But, worth every penny. They look great!

As for chess.com membership - you get a lot for free, already. But if you're really into chess... I guess by all means, go for it. It's not that expensive.

I've been a premium member for five years and feel I have continually gotten my money's worth.

Avatar of DrCheckevertim

Hey man, that's not a fact.

Chess.com isn't perfect, and there may be better options for some people, but it doesn't mean everyone is wasting their money here.

Not mentioning any names, but someone seems to have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed today.  Lot of hating...

Avatar of LouisCreed

I like the added perks. I'm going platinum due to the bandwidth of my android. I feel it's definitely worth it. 😄

Feel my Platinum (since Feb 2014) more than worth it; Only use PC to access, so can't speak to smart phone particulars.

Yes, we 'paid' can do a good job of rationalizing; need to: to keep up with the 'not paid' rationalizers!
