Is "gg" too much to ask?

It never ceases to amaze me how a people will take collective credit for the accomplishments of individuals.

Ernest O. Lawrence invented the color TV but he was better known for his work with Dr. Edward Teller (father of the hydrogen bomb).

If you want to talk about inventions, the Nazi's were flying jets and had prototypes for the Space Shuttle, ICBM's and Stealth bombers/fighters long before the USA. Their aerospace industry was easily 50 years ahead of the rest of the world. When the war ended, some of the scientists and engineers went East. Some went west. We all know the rest of the story.

Easily 50 years... hmm... I'd take the 1993 US Air Force against the 1943 German Air Force every day of the week and twice on Sundays. I'd even give odds.

Does anyone say "gg" anymore?  More and more often I get no response or a nasty comment.  Last week some guy typed like "lucky *sshole" after our game.  I used to wonder why so many chess players block chat, but now I see why it may be better.

What you have to realize is that for some its the "security" of sitting at a computer and not having to face there opponent.

It's not so much an excuse to be rude as it is to be lazy. It's just not a priority to type in gg or something on the internet. Yeah, in real life I would, but at home one can be busy and I don't think some text is required to make the winner feel... appreciated. Not that I never say gg, but not always.

Why should that amaze you?  Are you not a sports fan?  Have you never heard somebody say, when their favorite team won the night before, "boy, we really whipped 'em last night?"

I am a sports fan and when I hear other sports fans say something like that I'm always tempted to ask them what position they were playing.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

And then it turns out they are a Packer fan and own 1 share of the team.

Japanese the best-behaved tourists? I concur. It is amazing how well organized they are; a group of 40 Japanese tourists usually takes up no more than 20 square meters of space.

I'm not just tempted, I do ask.  The best response I've gotten, "I'm a member of the Detroit Pistons community."

I am never amazed when I hear someone taking credit for something they had nothing to do with, though.  Heck man, I think it was Obama that really got Ozzie confused, claiming the automobile was invented by an American.  sheesh...

ozzie_c_cobblepot

No, when Mr. Obama told that to the joint session of Congress, I was very confused, because I had recently been to the German Auto Show. I definitely "learned" it at an early age.

I'm a Cubs fan, and we had a pretty bad year in 2009. But on the bright side, we got 83 wins, for our third consecutive winning season. Now, if we could only do something about our nine-game-and-counting postseason losing streak, then I would be much happier.

I must admit.i hate losing and its hard to say gg,when your frustrated at losing, but i think its ruder, when you begin a game and the opponent who is on white does not even say hello,i think thats just ignorence.

GG

just keep saying "gg" no matter what..

musicalhair

I try to say gg after every game, especially if I want a rematch.  Yesterday I clicked on rematch and tried typing gg and it didn't come up.  I did it like 3 times and got nothing.  I don't know what happened (I'm using Firefox browser, it has been the most problem free for me), but in my mind I was worried about coming of like a sore loser or winner (I don't even recall if I won or lost).

I don't see gg as being about the game being played but about being appreciative of the fact that with the person on the other end we'd have no game at all.  I see it as "thanks".

NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!, unless your "g" key is broken, then i suggest typing "mm" for "masterful match" or "cc" for "correct conflict" or "ee" for energetic encounter" or "ff" for "fun fray"...

the options seem limitless

Oh no, more moaners. Just grow a thicker skin and ignore the discourteous minority (who are found everywhere in life).

Being fair though, if you try to show good sportsmanship, the opponent should aknowledge this and give a positive answer.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

I have a little discretion where I use gg or not. I usually say "hi, gl" at the beginning. If the opponent is good and we trade some games, usually the loser will say gg and the winner may say ty. If I win the first couple of games, I'll just say gg anyway, expertly defined above as a sort of "thanks for playing". If the opponent is rude, I might not say anything. If the opponent accuses me of cheating, usually because they don't understand lag or premove or both, then I usually tell them to report me and see how far they get with that.

If the opponent (or me) loses because of a terrible blunder, I might just say doh.

pinkpawn97

i dont think theres anything wrong with that. just keep being a good sport! :)
