Is Saying "GG" at the End of a Game a Sign of Victor's Mercy

When I first started playing, I thought my opponents meant "good grief!"

I refuse to believe anybody able to play chess at a halfway decent level is also stupid enough to get offended when someone types "gg" after a match. And if they do they obviously have a mental condition, sadly a very common occurrence in chess circles.

Why do so many people feel the need to be grandiloquent sesquipedalians?

But to answer your question, it's because it's blissful.

I usually only say gg if I lose to someone lower rated.  My favorite is the guy who responded 'yes'.

Well you're a gd.  (good dude).

Proper chess etiquette is to ONLY say "gg" if you lose. Otherwise, you are just being rude. I like to say "stinky," which is much better.

It really ps me off when someone says good game when mate is within a couple of moves when they are sure to win, if they would wait till the game is over mabie id make my last final moves a little faster instead of being compelled by ever fiber in me to throughly , throughly , look at all my options to just see if there is that one in a million chance i might have out of defeat. Then i check again. Then i see that i have no way out and i start to decide which of my peices i want to move next.  Then i pause and think if they know that them saying gg before the game is over was a bad idea. then i check one more time. before the end

try using spell check before you send. maybie = maybe, throughly = thoroughly, and peices = pieces . Sadly this is rampant thanks to public school

when i type "gg" .... I mean it ... it was a good game (win or lose).

If you are offended, then that is your problem.  To waste emotional energy on a comment like this is ..... a waste !

ps I like the paranoia quote.  CHEERS !!

If you have an understanding of chess etiquette you say gg after a game (not in capital letters though). This is learned via attending chess tournaments in real life, where no matter how the game went youre expected to put it behind you with a handshake and a good game. It's a way to show respect to your opponent and the game of chess.

Not saying gg is fairly rude, if it happened at a tournament people would look at you funny and probably avoid talking to you. But apparently on the internet some people think it's backwards. Thats why I dont like people who disable chat, it's almost an automatic act of hostility in my book saying at the beginning of the game they will behave rudely, and I feel compelled to either block, abort, or avoid those who do so. I don't always since I understand you run into some rude people online and want to avoid listening to them, but still it doesnt come across very well.

It's bizarre to me to think that "gg" could be taken badly -- it brings me back to high school sports contests (and I'm sure competitive chess is the same) where the teams line up to slap hands and say "good game" to each other afterwards, regardless of the quality of the game itself.  It's just simple etiquette, no hidden meaning.

I type "good game" almost every game, because I played a lot of online video games, where typing "gg" at the end of the game was just a good habit that everyone had, and often not typing "gg" was seen as rude. Maybe I should apply "gl hf" at the start of the game too?

I'm assuming "gg" means "Good God"! Although judging from the above that might be a little difficult for most to spell :-)

king_warrior

I really dont know what s wrong with some people here. If someone says good game you think he shows his power..or whatever you think he ment. Would you rather him to say ,,hey man you suck" than you would complain to chess.com So if you cant stand losing than you should consider stop playing chess or just disable bloody chat!!!

aargh, what do they say about Americans and irony? Not that I'd ever generalise, of course!

I only say gg if I mean it - if i enjoyed the game. If not, I'll never say it.

If we were aware of it, would it still be unconscious content? :P

I take 'gg' as a token of good sportsmanship, win lose or draw, unless the game isn't over yet. Like shaking hands after a baseball game, as others have mentioned.

Kingpatzer

The number of people who find their ego's bruised by the actions or non-actions of their opponents amazes me to no end.

I can't fathom going through life so insecure and uncertain of my own worth that I'd view  "gg" as insulting, let alone need to post about my paranoia and insecurity. How do you folks get out of bed in the morning? Seriously.

And I'm sure someone sees this post as insulting. But it's not meant to be. I honestly don't get how you can possibly deal with real day to day problems and even life's minor traumas if "gg" bothers you.
