A couple of days ago I accidently posted a political question under this category. One response justifiably accused me of trolling. My intention for the question was to get intelligent insight from the community members because I instinctively believe that Chess.com members are smarter than the average person. The queston is part of a debate I am having with a college educated family member. I will be more careful in the future to not post the wrong type of topic under a category. Subsequently, an intriguing question related to Chess in general (and this topic may be skirting the permissible fringes of this category) has occured to me... "Is the average Chess.com member more intelligent and insightful than the average college/university student?"

The average college/university student, the key word being *average*, is not particularly intelligent really.

At least not in the US, where some strange part of the culture says that everyone must go to college, as if college were really meant for most people, or even more than half of the population.

Maybe this question would have been reasonable a few decades ago, but judging by stories from some of my college friends from various colleges, I think that the average chess player is more intelligent than the average college student (although not necessarily the average chess.com member), and that's saying more about the average college student than the average chess player.

Furthermore, there are many almost inconceivable college majors today, many of which seem to develop under what I can only describe as cultural hysteria, for lack of a better term, and not anything concrete or objective.

But that's a different topic.

At least chess players know how to be objective, since you need objectivity to play decent chess.
