I view them as cousins. Or maybe siblings.
They both lash out at White's e4 pawn with the d5 pawn. They just use a different supporting pawn to do so (e6 or c6).
Objectively, I'm pretty sure they're unbeatable with best play - so there's no right or wrong answer. Just play the one that leads to the type of middlegames that you enjoy the most.
I think french is a little easier and works more in games for me.
