Per the definition of hero @ https://www.dictionary.com/browse/hero
Particulary, definition 3; ‘the principal male character in a story, play, film etc.’
As the principal (& only) character in his very own psychodrama, which stars many other versions (male & female, it seems) of his own personality, yes, I think he meets the criterion to be a hero.

By the literary definition, posted above, Hitler was a hero. DT is a hero. In the sacred texts of the western tradition, the Prince of Darkness is a hero. Sometimes literary types use the term antihero for heroes who are generally mundane fools (most of Saul Bellow's central characters, for instance), but they do not apply the term to villains. Villains are heroes.
So, the answer is yes. Trolls are heroes. We don't have to like them, and we should work to exterminate them, but they are heroes nonetheless.
