Is there a place for trash talk in chess?

Trash talking is for the weak-minded...you know, like fart humor, or PBR imbibing.

Trash talk does not mean talking about trash. Smile

Fo sho.

At least, in casual chess.

That's why Aronian loves it

Nakamura says he can talk trash because "Beep Beep Beep" (he can back it up)!

I agree.  Weak-minded.  Lacks the killer instinct to ever be world champ.

A couple of my favorite lines to use are: 'Stick to checkers.' and 'Don't think too hard, you'll hurt yourself.'  The first line works best immediately after you win the game, the second line works best when your opponent is taking a longer than usual amount of time to move.

Another good line to say is 'Well done, Kasparov.' immediately after your opponent blunders a piece.

You must read a lot of Oscar Wilde.

Absolutely Not. Do not talk to your opponent during chess.

I have seen GMs play casual blitz. Many of them do indeed trash talk when playing each other. They don't do it so much against us fish, but against each other, sure!

Of course. They're playing fr fun. But don't try this online! Online your opponent can't see if you are smiling or friendly. Your most casual banter can come across as insulting or nasty. Save the trash talk for your friends

OK, I'll make a note of that....

Talk trash to friends :)

The best burn I've ever heard in OTB chess was from an experienced GM after his 2200-rated opponent resigned (not naming any names here) - "At last, a correct move!"

With friends it's just maybe ok but IMO trash talk doesn't belong to chess. Thats why I dislike Danny Rensch's style

I recently had an OTB league match against a fellow club member (same club, different team), and obviously there was a bit of trash-talk. But it was in good nature and made it a bit more fun. In fact it actually helped me relax and I maybe played better as a result!

Over the board in blitz among friends? Absolutely! My college roommates and I used to have a blast playing blitz into the late hours, trash talking the whole way. One guy who used to lose more than the rest of us had this move he called the Podber sweep. I'm sure you can guess what that was.

See, I would classify that as, more or less, rude unless the 2200-rated player did some trash talking beforehand. You simply don't kick a man once he is already down.

Hustensaftjuengling

Trash talking in chess is like wine tasting in boxing.
