Is there any chance that a 1300 rated player can beat a 1400 rated player?

A 100 points is just that big of a difference. Of course a 1300 can beat a 1400 on any given day. Some days you have a good day and some days you have a bad day. Some players are strong in the opening and some are strong at the end game. The numbers just give you a relative idea of skill, and that is all.

I agree with thatwhichpasses and dumpstertrash. I'm surprised the question isn't rephrased as "Is there any chance a 1300 rated player can beat a 1301 rated player, and if there is a chance, has it ever happened in recorded history"

That's very true. Players under 1800 pretty much have several blunders/mistakes every game at least. Anyone can beat and lose to anyone (1100-1700) There is fine line which beyond her, players no longer can lose by normal game behavior (except cases where high rated is losing to low rated because difference in rating is so big the high rated don't pay concentration etc and hangs a rook) For example my game 1850 vs 1450 - i hang whole rook for free but at the end i was piece up and was winning by again by luck i underestimated his passed pawn and with 1 wrong move i was lost.
Also lots of cases where one player is very underrated or other is overrated.
Very usefull advice. If you are low rated and happen to win against high rated - keep in mind in his eyes he don't respect you. He does not play for real, it's natural. On other hand lower rated pays full attention and concentration. Beating high rated does not mean you are good or better or stronger than him. Nope. Just look at your rating then talk. There is a reason why you are low rated and he high rated. He does not play for real with you.
As i said earlier it might be the difference of pools. 1 min 1600 rated player will lose in 15 moves vs 1300 rated in 2+1 pool which is again bullet.

I got done in twice in a tournament today by players rated more than 100 points below me. Stuff happens. You only need to miss one move to get mated or lose your queen...

This seems like a parody of the "can a 1300 beat a 2700" thread. Of course a 1300 can beat a 1400 sometimes, although the 1400 is expected to win more often. In my experience if the rating separation is less than 200 points then anything can happen, 200 to 400 points the higher rated player wins most of the time, and +400 points the higher rated player wins almost always, but upsets do happen. I myself have beaten players 300 points above me and drawn against players 700 points above me.

Of course it is possible. Let's assume that both players played for a long time already and their rating stopped at 1300 and 1400. A higher rating only says that the better player has a higher probability to win. So if they would play a lot of games the 1400 player would win more games.
But a high probability to win also implies that the improbable can occur like a draw or a loss.
Another example:
If you look at the World Cup you can see that many favorites got kicked out very earlier e.g. Nakamura. Nakamura is still a good player and he would win most of the games against his weaker opponent. But there will be games where he loose it's just less likely but not impossible.
I have blown several games vs lower rated players. It gets easier to lose when you are old and get careless. I don't follow my own advice: Try to look at everything before you move. (Not possible in speed chess). I don't mind losing too much. I am not worried about my rating anymore. I have never been a really good player. I can't see the board in my head, and anything more that 3-4 moves deep eludes me. But I love the game and playing, and that's what counts.
