Is there any chance that a 1300 rated player can beat a 2700 rated player?

On the other hand, when I was like 1850 or 1900 strengths, I used to play against several 2500 GMs with a 1 minute to 5 minute odds in my favor. One of them beat me 14:1. One other, 8:4 - only with the third GM (strangely, the strongest of the three, and an ex candidate) I had a respectable record at this time control - then we moved to 1 minute to 3 minute and he would beat me like 6 games to 3.

Just to give you an idea...

I'm about 2000 strength, more or less. I can beat an 1300 or 1400 regularly, down a queen, while giving 5 to 2 minutes odds, and letting him take back four times in a game at his own choice (including taking back a couple or three moves at a time - this counting as two or three takebacks, respectively). Tried and proved.

Down a queen I don't believe.

Even a bright guy who just learned chess that very same day should be able to beat you with a queen up.

Then the time advantage is really overrated: if a player is much stronger than (i.e. 400+ points) you he'll just predict everything you can possibly do and prepare an immediate answer during your own thinking time.

I can certainly believe I'd throw away a queen advantage in blitz.

A yes, I should have specified: in regular time control.

A person not used at blitz will inevitably make blunder after blunder, after all blitz it's not real chess.

But in regular time control with hours on the clock even the first day chess player will be able to avoid hanging pieces or falling for obvious #. And I don't see how you could get outplayed if you're up a queen.

Na the worst thing you can do is pawn grab in the opening. If you develop quickly enough it's tough to imagine throwing that away.

a player rated 1600 in makes 1 mistake every 2 moves, now a grandmaster makes 2 tiny mistakes a match, thus a a player rated 1300 would keep making mistake regulary and the gm would know how to respond, easy and simple :)

"a player rated 1600 in makes 1 mistake every 2 moves"

Where did you read that nonsense?

Looking at your profile, I think you are an attention seeker. You are not even 2000 here, and your loss to hardlyiwin is mightily impressive. I mean, this checkmate could not have been foreseen by a GM! But I guess you are the best player in  Brussels, France.

Once in an otb tournament I saw this young woman (21 or so) who had impressive breasts and was wearing something that pretty much helped everybody to notice it. If the guy in front was a 2700 single man who has not had any sexual encounter in the last year, and she is an all decided to win young woman, yes, he might loose. I still remember the poor guy playing against her, he would put both his hands on his forefront and look exclusively at the board, unlike the rest of the people in the room, including other players, referees, viewers, passers by, and any sort of male creature with eyes, including the writer, that were completely captivated by her... great game.

No ,i believe anything possible but this would take a catastrophic event. They may b able to score 1 in a 10 game series though.

He's definitely not.

I would be below 1600 OTB rating and I certainly don't make a mistake nearly that often.

It's a ridiculous statement.

What do you think is more likely? My being elected President in the upcoming United States presidential election or you beating Kramnik in a chess game?

The upcoming election candidates have already been decided so your chance is 0% (you are not an option), so of course me beating kramnik is more likely, and if he makes the same blunder as in fritz match then it should be easy for me.

yet you have a chance in the 2016 US presidential election as long as you satisfy qualifications. good luck!

Actually, that's technically wrong.  Even if the ballots were already made, he can still announce his candidacy up to the election.  On American ballots, there is a write in spot for people to write in names of those who are not on the  printed ballot.  Even if he didn't announce his candidacy, the write in vote could still use his name.  It doesn't matter though since the popular vote has no effect on the presidential election.  It's the electoral college that isn't going to vote for him, unless he uncovers their identities and bribes them handsomely.  Sure, the electoral college is supposed to vote based on the popular vote, but it doesn't really apply.

Yes, there are stupid names written in for the write-in vote, such as Darth Vader.  Why would someone go to vote just to write in something stupid?  Might as well vote for Ron Paul if one wants to throw their vote away...

What does being married or single have to do with any of that?  :-p

I've read that a common handicap back in the day (now, too?) was for the stronger player to either start without their queen or their f-pawn, and strong players could still beat weak players with these odds.  I'd say down a queen still gives the 2700 an advantage, and maybe the 2000.  I'd be interested in seeing this, though.

Agree about the time.

I don't like the fact that us 1300s are getting harped on for being easy to beat.  Me not happy Cry  Other than that, have a great day everyone Smile

Some people are just snobbish and don't talk about those lower than them in a gentle way.

Some FMs, CMs, and NMs are rated here in the 1900s, blitz rating. Some people are untitled, and make 2100+ here in the blitz rating. I didn't find a direct correlation, however yes - OTB 1300s to 1400s are invited to play me up a queen, no real problem there. Add me as friend and challenge me - we can make this experiment and I don't mind losing those rating points...
