Is using fingers as pointers allowed in chess?

This sounds like a troll question, but it's not...

Is it against any rule to use your fingers to point to pieces on the board as an aid to help you calculate/remember unit placement during visualization of the game in progress? Mostly I'm thinking of a situation where you're holding your fingers up in front of your eyes to mark where a piece or two has gone while calculating what happens around it, but I suppose the question could also be extended to mean you're holding your fingers over the pieces on the board, though I imagine in the latter case that could be considered interfering with your opponent's view of the board.

It's one of those things that's against the spirit of the rules, but isn't expressly forbidden, and you could likely do it without any consequences.

Thanks, leiph18. It's just an odd question I've been wondering lately since I noticed I was sometimes doing that with my fingers when looking at a position on my computer screen or in a book of puzzles. Maybe beginners could use this trick at the risk of upsetting their opponents.

Sometimes I'll repeat in my head the name of the square... then at the end of analysis I'm thinking "g4....g4" and then, oh yeah, g4 Tongue Out

"At the risk of upsetting their opponents"

Yeah, that's the way they'd get you for it I think. If you kept your hand by your eye so there's pretty much no distraction for your opponent then I think it would be fine. Hovering your hand over the board repeatedly wouldn't be ok.

Sorry! No flipping off during a game.
