Both reasons, I think. He took the name of his mother's family, wich is Kasparian, and gave it a Russian touch changing it to Kasparov. These details were important in the USSR.

ridiculous. Grandmaster Garry Kasparov should be president of the world chess federation or FIDE. he would be in a sane world. He is the greatest chess player alive, along with Karpov, was undisputed champion for the longest period of time and there's only maybe 2 or 3 other people in the world who know as much as he does in regards to chess tournament play. would just make sense wouldn't it? Garry Kasparov president of FIDE.........it's weird that he's not is all I'm going to say.
