Isn't it kind of sad?

I would throw Internet chess away in an instant if there was a real chess club in my town. I'm tired of it but I love chess to much to stop. It's a cycle that will only be fixed when I move to a place where chess is abundantly played

In the old days (15 years ago) if you wanted to play chess you had to go out to the club.

I'd actually prefer the "old days" which I was probably not alive for most of, but it sounds quite a bit more interesting (if more difficult) than modern life.

It's no longer a social game. You can watch your chess DVDs, study your books, play thousands of games on your sofa, have the computer analyze your games, and never even talk to another chessplayer until you shake his hand at the tournament.

I'm ok with being an online player only. So much easier when you have a lot stuff going on, but have a few minutes here and there. It would be nice to play otb now and then though with a friend or someone that's also into chess, but I don't know anyone. Maybe I should get out to clubs and meet some lol.

I'm quite active in chess clubs, both here in Belgium and also when I go to Mexico or to other places.
Online chess brings new publics into quality chess, who before that would have nothing to do with it.
People who love clubs don't suddenly leave them because now there's also online chess.

I literally just got back home from my regular Thursday night chess club. Just saying.

Solskytz always being positive.
Solskytz did you play chess 20 years ago? Isn't it tremendously different?

You could try to start a chess club in your area but it would be difficult since a lot of players won't bother.

Yeah, how many potential GRANDMASTERS have been forever lost to videogames??

It is way different.
First of all, I play better today than I did back then. I know way more. I'm much less naive as a player.
Secondly - it seems that EVERYONE (or almost) are sharper tactically.
So yes, people can train using online sources - this is great.
Apart from that, I'm not really sure how much changed... I also changed too many countries in these 20 years... my own life and reality changed a lot - now go figure, how much in the change is in me and how much is in the people.
Also, I'm 20 years older (45 compared to 25) - that also changes perspective in many ways...
In short - I'm not sure how OBJECTIVELY I can answer you on this.

The problem is that most people try to start clubs in quiet places. My club meets in a bar & grill on Tuesdays and has no problem maintaining a steady presence of about 12-20 people per night with more on tournament nights. There are the regulars and a rotating group of about 20 or so people who come every so often. It's a bit noisy sometimes and not the ideal place for kids or the quiet folks, but it is something that can be done.

i dont have a club either , just have to read books . Every book i read gets harder and harder ..
Totally a bang your head against the wall feeling reading chessbooks..
for me it is.

Online chess is what i do to pass the time.
OTB chess is what i do for enjoyment, and learning.

Chess is a game. It has to be played. Study has its place in improvement, but it's play that will make you better.

Internet chess has never kept me away from actual chess clubs. I've been an active member of a local club for almost 3 years, and I also play in local tournaments when the opportunity presents itself.
I think chess players keep themselves away from actual chess clubs, assuming there is a local chess club to keep away from.
