Isn't the qd8 Scandinavian defense just a waste of time?
yes it does but the thing with an advantage in time is it dissipates if you can't do anything concrete while the other guy is catching up. in the main lines of the qd8 scandinavian, the best white can get is the bishop pair and a long grind, or a bit more space but nothing dramatic. his advantage in time usually transforms into one of these.
time advantage means more if the position can change in a violent way, or just quickly enough.
i have played the qd8 scandinavian and i have 1 e4 as my repertoire so i have studied both sides of this opening. i can say for certain i did not find a violent way to make use of the time advantage white gets. the best i have is getting the bishop pair.
Many people have been playing the qd8 Scandinavian defense but it seems like a waste of time to me since you are moving the queen twice, and once the queen comes back to the home square black has no pieces developed. Doesn't it just give more time for white?
