You can't compare tournament rules to online rules. If you thought everyone else wasn't using a board to 'move the pieces around', that's just your own innocence.  A sad, ignorant, innocence.  The kind that get's squashed by the OBVIOUS reality, that unless your online opponent(on chess.com) is using an engine, they are NOT cheating!

For example chess.com provides analysis boards in online but not live. It has nothing to do with tournament rules. It's just one of those common sense things... that it's not in the spirit of the game. It may not be written anywhere but only cheaters check for loopholes like that Wink

This would be a good troll topic up there with how pre moves are illegal.

As calculation keeps being brought up... isn't calculation merely a crutch for people who haven't seen enough positons to know what to do without calculating it

Yeah, good players have seen 10^50 positions so they don't need to calculate.

Consequently there are no good players like that.

GideonDerTactician

its only cheating if your using a computer to cover for your lack of skills

leiph18

Like lack of calculation skills for example, when you use an analysis board to cheat.

Or using a book or database for lack of memory.

Or hey, having your friend play a few moves for you.

bgianis

This site gives us the option to have an analysis board. It is not powered by engines. Where is the cheating?

We are discussing live chess.

What you are referring to is 'Online Chess' which, of course, is Chess.com's version of correspondance chess. Where you are allowed to use an analysis board.

Apotek

It is not enough for cheaters that they can safely cheat by using a side board to move the pieces around. They also want us to believe that this is not cheating!pathetic...

It's not cheating, in ANY sense of the word(sense or spirit).  If you wanna live out the fantasy in your head, that is your choice.  But, quit calling me a cheater, it is offensive, and incorrect.

leiph18

From my POV, the fantasy is in your head.

We can agree to disagree though.

kleelof

Could you guys (BKB and Leiph) remind us if you are talking about Live Chess or, the incorrectly named, Online Chess?

leiph18

Live chess.

JGambit

Leiph is obviously right, but your not going to stop idiots like big king bud from cheating. Just be happy knowing that you would crush this guy face to face.

kleelof

Yeah, if you BOTH are actually talking about Live chess, I would say moving the pieces around is not in the correct spirit of fair play. In fact, if I found out someone was doing that, I would probably be inclined to call them a cheater.
