Yes Afaf I agree. What messes my game up is if they are good looking, know what to say and beat me at chess. This combination and i may as well not play.

Cerebral If it is because people are self-conscious about their looks, what do they do in when they go out in the real world? You could be right about a small percent of the members. I don not think it is as plain and simple as you suggest.
in the real world it's different cause they have no choice:people have to work,make a living,etc.of course....there's a big chunk of people that are just too lazy to put up photos,and others cause of manipulation issues.we can't know for sure what the actual percentages are though.

The reason why my profile picture isn't me, is because I don't have any pictures of myself in the last two years.
If I did have a semi-decent picture of myself, I woulden't mind changing m profile picture.
I think being anonymous is good though, some people might look at a picture and decide not to play that person based on the pic alone, for the same reason you wouldn't talk to them in a bar, whatever that is.

Hehe, funny how that works isn't it? I am quite easy going that way (at least as far as Chess is concerned) and will play anyone at least once. My approach changed slightly about a year ago after 25 games with the same guy, I realised that I wanted to play as many people as I can in my lifetime so I stopped asking for rematches.
If someone has a particularly good looking avatar and they are rated within 400 pts above me...I'm all for rematches.

I'm happy to provide information but it's very different for me as I am an artist and happy to share or promote my work. I create cute/cool/ & creepy images for kids and odd people. I market them on t-shirts, hoodies and other clothing and novelties. I paint, draw and sculpt. My influences and interests are eclectic.
you're right, afaf; Sutton Chess Congress, early '90s, found meself drawn against young lady (early 20s at a guess) who was an absolute knockout an' dressed to kill - I was 3/400 higher than her on FIDE's number list ( I'd already messed up one of me openin' two games) - an she creamed me !
I cuddn concentrate at all ! 
it ddn help that almost every player there seemed to be takin' an' extraordinary interest in 'the game' ( my proverbial ! 
) so there were people floatin' round the board the whole time
