Joshua Waitzkin?

Strategic intuition comes with tens and hundreds of thousands situations that have to be analysed by the player (and in discussion with a trainer who has not less background ) and not just to be looked at. An analysis of one situation can take less than an hour today, with a computer, but it also could take an evening, if several plans/approaches have to be tried !

This is not easy to get ! It is exactly this quality why the 'Soviet school'

(Russia, Ukrain, Armenia, Georgia...) has by far the most GM'S over 2600.

that is a very interesting topic.

Australia had a similar player to Josh 30 years ago. Greg Hjorth almost won the Australia title as a 16 year old and showed all the potential in the world. He reached master level but didnt go onto being a GM. I think the problem with Greg was that he had so many fields of interest. Chess just wasnt number one. His main love was advanced mathmatics.

To become a top 10 player in the world means that that you must live and breathe chess every day. Some people just cannot do that.

MrDamonSmith

it's all luck

Conflagration_Planet

He choked on his rook.

Conflagration_Planet

Sarwer's father made him quit.

MrDamonSmith

Who's Joshua Waitzkin?

The only guy they know for sure is better than Fischer ever was.

MrDamonSmith

Oh yeah. The one who was in the movie about Jeff Sarwer!

Conflagration_Planet

Yep.      Laughing

MrDamonSmith

You know, Jeff says when he was blogging on another site he used to give Josh 5 to 2 blitz odds. I actually believe him.

Conflagration_Planet

I wonder what Josh would say about it.

MrDamonSmith

I'm not sure. But I read on chessgames dot com where Jeff posted a few years back that someone complained about Sarwer claiming that Josh left for the bathroom crying during their championship game that was at the end of the movie. It turns out that Josh himself confirms it. My point being that with all the rumors and such the only people that really know are those there and so far Jeff makes a point and Josh says yeah its true seems to give credibility to it.

MrDamonSmith

But from what I've read they both speak very well of each other

Of course it would give credibility to it. What was he crying about?

MrDamonSmith

He was crying about his situation in the game. Josh Waitzkin was losing, AGAIN. Sarwer and Waitzkin had played a year earlier in the same tournament, primary nationals ( didn't hear that in the movie, right?) and Jeff won that game. Keep in mind Jeff Sarwer is a year and a half younger without the training and privileges that Josh has. Jeff Sarwer was HOMELESS. They don't tell that story in the movie. That's the real made for movie story based on reality.

Josh was crying because he was losing this game as well. He was lucky to draw. Go look up both games on chessgames.com

Chess is enough to make you cry.  Cry  :)

Jeff and his sister were taken from their father for a brief time. I guess it was for not being in school and their living conditions. They ran away and back to their father and split. Nobody heard from any of them for many years. They stayed mobile.

Do you know what Jeff's rating was when he won the U 10 WC?
