Just Hit 2200 On Chess.com Rapid Time Control

This has been a huge milestone for me as 2200 was not a rating I thought I would ever hit when I picked up the game two and a half years ago. Anyways, here we are!!! I'm definitely going to try and go for USCF National Master in the coming years. Does anyone know if this is a realistic goal? I know that OTB chess is a much different animal than online (I'm only 1500 OTB btw). I think I'll update this if I ever achieve NM to document the achievement.

Here's the game that did it: Super Sick 2200 Rating Game

Hey, congrats.

It's fun to see 1000 points of honest improvement, and it makes for a nice animated graph (below)

The green shape on the left is related to how much time you took on each move (50 games per frame). The blue bar on the right is your average rating for those 50 games.

You'll notice the highest green bar is at 1 or 2 seconds... the fun thing about these graphs (IMO) is discovering that essentially everyone over 1000 or so looks the same.

Anyway some people find it interesting to see theirs, so here's 2900 rapid games over 29 months.

Wow this is really cool, thank for putting it together for me! The trend actually makes a lot of sense since as I got better my increased chess understanding translated into quicker decisions with fewer long thinks thrown in.

I think u definitely can go for NM but it's not gonna be easy u warn u. A lot of people even in the 1800 OTB range are like 2400 online but they are just sandbagging to play below 2000 tournaments or didn't play enough tournaments. I would say if u want to go for NM, U should go to a OTB chess club and play atleast 30min each games with the strongest players there

Yeah I've definitely experienced playing some underrated opponents in OTB tournaments. I think my general goal is to keep improving so that I can beat anyone who shows up to my section regardless of if they are sandbagging or not. Also do you know how to find chess clubs? I'm going to be moving to Connecticut soon and would like to find a strong one there where I can get some practice in.

Yeah man, go for it.

When I compare OTB and online rating I notice kids tend to have a wider gap. Someone who is a teenager and 2400 in all 3 live time controls may not be a NM strength OTB. But a 60 year old may have 2200 online time controls and be close to IM heh. It just depends.

And like the other guy said, playing OTB is good practice for OTB. You wouldn't have to make it a big deal... maybe only 1 or 2 events per year just to help you get experience will be useful... then when you go for NM play as often as you need / want.

In some ways it will be good to stay underrated... I've seen people gain points faster, beating people they normally wouldn't, because their rating is so low their opponent doesn't take them seriously enough... as your rating gets closer to your skill it becomes harder to keep winning.

Playing lots of OTB chess is good of course, but just saying...

Congratulations on reaching your milestone! With your rate of improvement, I think that reaching National Master or even beyond that is a realistic goal in due time, and I wish you luck with all your chess aspirations.

Congratulations on reaching a rating of 2200 in chess! That's a significant milestone, especially considering that you started playing just two and a half years ago. Setting your sights on becoming a USCF National Master is an ambitious goal, and it's great to have such aspirations.

Best of luck on your chess journey, and I hope you continue to update and document your achievements along the way!

Great job! It's been really cool when I hit 2200 on rapid as well, but reaching 2200 on blitz was unreal (on other profile).

I also like being underrated since I can fund my trips to tournaments with the prize money I win.
