1- many of us don't have time to play a losing position.
2- most players would much rather someone resign. I have been criticised for not resigning in the past, and judging from personal experience and the vast number of threads/comments s out resigning on chess.com, I think it's fair to assume that, if one is in a completely lost position, one's opponent would rather one resigns.
That is also true for non-lost positions, your opponent always wants you to resign, but ultimately the choice is yours.
