This film was about a young chess player. .  .

It could have been about a  tennis, golfer, basketball player and it would have been just as good . . . But I'm glad it was about chess . . .

I don't have a tape player to play it with.

I read the book. I didn't see the movie. I don't remember much of what I read. I might want to see the movie.

I read stuffs online. That's where I get my "know-ledge".

I've read that Bobby Fischer objected to the use of his name.

I think he has a point. What if there is a book or movie using a sports star (fill in the blank). Searching for Michael Jordan, Searching for Maria Sharapova, about a kid trying to get to top of the mountain (that's a great thing) but never got anywhere near the top the mountain, does it it even sell? Kids do that everyday in every sports. Searching for Baryshnikov? etc . . .

You definitely can't call a book or a movie Searching for John Cena, because "John Cena" is a property of the WWE (not to mention John Cena).

How would you even name the book? The Lessons of Chess and The Lessons of Life. (That's not bad).

I think Bobby Fischer got gypped.

I saw that film when it first came out. The funny thing is that I just realized that the guy who does the main Chess "Academy" on Chessmaster 11, Josh Waitzkin, is the real life kid from that film. I'd had wondered, from time to time, why they chose to brand their software around a mere IM, as opposed to someone the likes of an Anand or Magnus Carlsen. I suppose that their marketing team decided that the target audience of a beginner oriented chess game (especially one that has a console game version) would be more familiar with someone with their own youth oriented movie.

On another note, another chess themed movie that is rarely mentioned is the 1994 movie, "Fresh"   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/

---   I missed this thread the first time around but it is quite interesting. Also I luv the line by this guy where he says: " a mere IM ", best line I've seen in a while. Yup a Mere IM, too funny  Rofl.
