if someone has not ever watched Star Wars should they start at episode one or the way they were put out in theaters.

Most people I know say that they wish they had skipped Episodes One to Three entirely and just stuck with the originals. (Star War, Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back)

Hi soupbowl--the popular opinion is that the earlier releases, Episodes IV/V/VI, are each extraordinary while I-III are weaker overall.  Episode I is considered the worst of the bunch, sorely disappointing people when it came out in theaters since they weren't expecting that.  II and III get slightly better, so you could watch them for closure or just as easily skip all the later ones.  Bear in mind that people survived 16 years without a sequel/prequel to Episode IV, so ignoring I-III is hardly going to ruin anyone's life.
