Karpov and Kasparov played more than 180 games against each other including several matches. This must be the greatest rivalry in chess history? Have any other great players played more games against one another?

Kasparov won more games than he lost with Karpov , +7 I believe.

If you have a question (about chess), choose the more simple solution: ask batgirl.

The rivality between Fisher and Spassky maybe, not more games played, but a nice rivalry that didn't only nvolve them two either.

Spassky and Fischer played 56 games , with 28 draws, Fischer winning 17 and losing 11. Smyslov-Botvinnik  and Karpov-Korchnois rivalries also were over 100 games.

Even more interesting to me, concerning Fischer-Spassky, has always been that prior to their 1972 match they had only met OTB 5 times and of those five games Spassky had a +3=2 score against Fischer.  Yet Fischer entered the match, at least outwardly, with supreme confidence.

But the rivalry between Fischer and Spassky didn't involve any animosity between the players.  Kasparov and Karpov were oil and water.

As far as I know the Kaspaov-Karpov series was a record, at least at that level, unless someone like Tim Krabbé might have researched and found something different.

In fact, our own billwall is an excellent resource for facts such as this.

Dear friends,   it may interest you to know that I have not only met  Anatoly Karpov but played a game with him too. He was then FIDE World Champion, while Kasparov was World Champion of the Professional Chessplayers' Federation~.  Yes!  There were 2 world champions at that time because the World Title was split.  Karpov gave a 20 board simultaneous- exhibition in  Singapore and I was picked to play one of the boards. Needless to say I lost. Karpov's play was so faultless and I did Not make any weak moves either, and yet, he was able to smother any attempt I tried to make a fight of it and smothered my game completely. Even the way he ended the game was very elegant. I shall post this game for discussion later.

Kasparov...end of debate

I've been reading Kasparov's autobiography, "Unlimited Challenge" it is a riveting account of his chess history and the politics that surround the game at its most professional in the Soviet.

Kasparov accepts that Karpov had a superb understanding of positional play. I still recognise that Kasparov is a better player, though.

Escape - Check Wikipedia, Kasparov. It has a great account of Ksp's play against computers, although i've heard recently that wikipedia's reputation for giving out accurate information precedes its actual ability, lol. Laughing

Wiki is ok, even great when it comes to basic facts. But do verify everything as there're a lot of personal agendae behind what gets published there.

Haha, you crack me up.  Anyway, I think Karpov is better.

for me KARPOV is better than Kasparov, even more so if they are of the same age.For me simple positions like that of Karpov produce more beautiful games.
