In 1998 Peter Tatchell interrupted the Archbishop of Canterbury's Easter sermon by holding a speech on gay rights. He was fined 18 pounds. Maybe not as spectacular as what Pussy Riot did but on the other hand he did interrupt the Archbishop himself.

Seriously, time served and a fine would have diffused the situation comprehensively.  Sure, they would be heroes for a while, but they'd be swiftly forgotten.

What America understands better than every other country in the world is that to truly render dissent ineffective, all you have to do is allow it a few meagre channels of escape; just enough to render enough participants pleased, not enough to mount a sustainable challenge to the status quo.

In any case, sounds like an empty hint of a threat. That just won't happen, even if the incumbent government aren't noted for their respect for the rule of law, both national and international.

"This simply will not do.  It's just not cricket!"

The very fact of the threat-making shows how beholden the government is to the imperial whims of the United States, which is funny seeing as the latter did everything to destroy the British position of power following both World Wars...

I have been reading your posts and I really think this isnt the place for you to voice your opinions. Its seems very clear to me that balanced, anti-jingoist, pro- democracy views will be shot down by those who refuse to be culturally challenged. Be gone, naysayer!

Was Kasparov actually beaten physically, are there bruises and wounds all over his body?  How serious was this beating?

Really amazing how they are still not having free speech in post-USSR environment.

FREE KASPAROV!!!

PUSSY RIOT RULES!

According to Twitter, Kasparov is released and has sought medical attention to prove that he is not drunk or biting anyone.

If the Obama Administration is at all concerned about Human Rights in Russia, why oppose the Magnitsky Act?

Are you actually trying to make sense?  And seeing as the guy I was having a discussion seemed not to be offended, why exactly do you care?

Politics and Religion both try to get you on your knees.

One through law, ideology and finance.

The other through conditioning and ritual.

I suppose we have to be seen to be merciful when we work for one of these institutions to keep up PR lol

Sounds to me like Kasparov was treated accordingly. What do you expect if you fight and bite a police officer. All the liberal hippies will cry police brutality as usual. I'd love to see photos of injuries from this so called beating that we will never see bc there was no other bearing other than the one trying to subdue him after biting a cop.

It was all done in a cathederal that Stalin ordered destroyed and was rebuilt in the 1990's

So was this more akin to Mike Tyson-style ear biting?  Or more like Marv Albert-style back biting?

mattyf9

Lolol. I dunno. Good question.

How many others got there skulls cracked that weren't on tv?

Very strange thread.  It debates Assange and the Pussy Riot under the pretense of being about an ex-chessplayer being arrested.  A few misconceptions from some people (not all).  Firstly, in the Assange case it is the sexual assault case from Sweden that he has to answer but his defence was that he believed at some point down the line he would be "persecuted" by facing extradition to US over the Wikileaks so claimed asylum under that basis.  As for the British government, their assertion that they might go against the Vienna agreement is an obscure British law which terrifies their own ambassadors round the world - even if they have a shaky legal justification for going in to Ecuadorian embassy it would set a precedent for violation of their own embassies round the world.  Never going to happen, was it?  The Pussy Riot - they violated the church (not a believer myself); the Russian people view the Church as more sacrosanct than those of most Western countries simply because the Church faced persecution in the past regimes and is not a fair target in that country in the eyes of its people - not a bright move on the part of the publicity seeking activists.  Which brings us back to Kasparov - did he damage his political career?  Certainly not.  Is he sobbing to himself in his room?  I shouldn't think so - he will be cracking open champagne over his highlight in the media.

That's called "the Kasparov Attack".
