Chessmetrics - a fascinating site by the way, has Benko at number 33 in the World in 1970, if that answers the question!!

Haha yeah I'll settle for that. The sacrifice was sound!

Keres was much stronger than Botvinnik, and he was cheated because of politics and not being a Russian. There are many player that were cheated Rubinstein, Pillsbury, Shirov, Bronstein, Tal { second match Tal was sick and Botvinnik insist on playing} and many more. Botvinnik goes down in history as the worse world champion, and a cheater. Lasker held it for 27 years and is no credit to him, he avoid the best players; he could of played Rubinstein, Pillsbury, Charousek, Schechter { the condition were in Lasker favor, the challenger had to win by two points and why limit the match to ten games only. } and Maroczy. Lasker should be call the avoider. happy.png

The usual conspirational nonsense.

Keres managed to win his first game against Botvinnik in 1948, eleven years after their first encounter, and their score being +0 =6 -6 up to then.

Oh dear oh dear! 2 very quick points to yureesystem and the usual anti lasker stuff. Please show one documented example of lasker refusing to play a match with anyone, ( I know of one!!) and then read up on the facts regarding the schlechter match. 😉

@impfren. Nice to see someone saying something sensible on these kinds of topics. Thanks!😉

True! Before 1948 Keres did not win one game against Botvinnik; but Keres had a better record on two top players Euwe and Capablanca than Botvinnik, before 1948 Botvinnik could not beat Euwe. but Keres did.

The unfairness that Lasker put in his conditions, Schlechter had to win by two points.

). An example of this type of claim is given by Garry Kasparov, who simply states that However, to all appearances, one of the points stated that to win the title the challenger had to gain an advantage of two points, and that if Schlechter were to win by one point (5½-4½) the match would be declared... drawn. (Garry Kasparov, On My Great Predecessors Part I, 2003, Everyman, p.173)

Who Keres?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I don't mean to be mean. Obviously some people do.

In that case Kasparov is incorrect. Like you he obviously didn't do hus reseaech before attacking people who are no longer around to defend themselves. Try again, and you still havent given a documented in case of laskrr refusing to play aoneone.😁

I appreciate Keres contribution to chess theory. The Keres Attack against the Schevenigen creates trouble for black. 6. g4 looks awkward, but it is the best move.

Koittheman

Because Paul Keres was Estonian which was occupied by the USSR. The USSR didnt favour other nationalities over the Russians, and so he simply wasnt allowed to win.

Otherwise he (probably) would have played Alekhine in 1940 or so.

Alekhine made several promises to have a match with the winner of different tournaments, but always stalled, never followed through. He just wanted to publicize the tournaments so the organizers would pay him a fat appearance fee. No way he would have ever played a match vs anyone he thought had a real chance of taking his title.
