This guy goes to my local chess club and he beat me with 30 seconds vs 3 minutes. He does do a lot of tactics I’ll tell you that

3350 online tactics rating, yet only 1954 uscf. Online ratings are joke.

This is why i dont put a lot of credence in online ratings, unless youre an established ttled player.

He is having a good run at the World Open tournament also. In addition to winning the Philadelphia International U2100 he just won his 4th round game at the WO so he is +2-1=0 in the World Open U2000 section (he took a 1st round bye)

I guess the jokes on you for comparing the two. Regardless, it's pretty obvious that his dedication towards completing tactics has improved his OTB performance as well. If he keeps at it, he'll be a master level OTB in no time.

I doubt anyone is questioning the young mans dedication.  I think what the deal is, that an obscenely high online ratinig doesnt equate to a comparable OTB rating.

While it is true that a tactics rating means very little, being 3300+ puts him in the top 100 on the site.  That's very selective company, and suggests he is doing something right.

Also, he claims to be underrated, as he has not had a chance to compete in OTB rated events for awhile.  At his most recent one, the U2100 in Philadelphia, he came in first and earned a fairly nice prize.

We should pay attention to his story, because he is not a wunderkind who was GM by 15.  That is, he's working hard and seeing steady improvement, which is more than many of us can say with out current efforts.  We should all step back and look at how he is training (namely, lots of tactics using spaced repetition) and ask ourselves if it might not benefit us. That is what I am doing.
