KING SAFETY

Your success in chess is determined by how well you keep king, pieces, and pawns safe. You can lose pieces and pawns if you get something of equal value back; but you just can't lose the king.

    When is the king safe?

A KING IS NOT SAFE if there are weak squares around it.

A king is not safe if there are lines of attack to it.

A king is safe if its castled and its surrounding pawns have not moved.

There are times one can learn when to move the pawn in front of the king. h3 and h6 are popular pawn moves.  A king is not safe if stranded in middle of board and opponent can work up an attack on open files and diagonals aimed at the king.   Check your king's safety each move. Think, how did my opponent's move affect my king's safety?    And then check your opponent's king's safety.

Remember:  whoever gets there first, wins.

I am building a 'learners file' to illustrate king, piece, and pawn safety.   It should be done in 2 weeks.    Just ask if you want it. chesskia@bellsouth.net    Bill WALL ON our site has an article on king safety.   EXCELLENT article, I recommend you read it.

This is review of step one of my 8-step CHESS THINKING PROCESS.

Good stuff. It's always nasty (depending what side you are one) when a few sacs gets the king in the middle of the board.

Of course there are exceptions to all 3 of those depending on the placement of your opponent's pieces.  For example even if none of the pawns have moved, if your pieces have abandoned that side of the board your king may be very unsafe.  Or, if your opponent only has a few pieces to attack with then you can afford many weak lines/squares.

Whoever gets there first wins?  I guess people like Capablanca, Petrosian, Karpov, Botvinnik, and possibly Smyslov were just lucky to get good endgames after failing to deliver mate in 30 moves and then later become WC Tongue out

The king is a powerful strategic piece.

The king is safe when the opposing queen and at least one of the opponent's rooks are off the board, and usually not before then.  Of course, after that, king activation is very important, because in a materially even endgame, the side with the more active king almost always wins.
