Knights or bishops-which is better?

If you're talking about one of each piece then as you know the Bishop can move from as far as one corner to another in one move. But it's restricted to one color of square on every move. And if your opponent puts his/her pawns on squares your Bishop can't reach you may not be able to stop them from promoting a pawn later on. A Knight moves much slower but it can eventually reach everywhere on the board, even leaping over units of both sides to do so. And the closer it gets to the center of the board the more squares it can move to or affect what enemy piece(s) can move to those squares. Keep in mind too if you're asking about in a middle- or endgame position a Bishop can be trapped between yours and your opponent's pawns. Or trapped behind your pawns and pieces where you'll get little use from it. Maybe you can set up some positions on a board using minor pieces and pawns to see how effectively they stop pawns from being promoted, hemming in the other King, and so on. Or study games to see how well minor pieces were used in them (or weren't) and why.

wrong word: better
right word: more powerful
defination of power: number of squares controlled by a piece
- knights control more squares in closed positions (like in openings and closed middlegames)
- bishops control more squares in open positions (like in endgames)
that said, bishops can also control good amount of squares in early stages.. only if placed "correctly" like putting your sniper in a church tower (longest diagonals).. therefore bishops are said to be a little more powerful in general.
but knights have special abilities at forking and attacking pieces like no others'.. and many players have difficulty at seeing possible forking potentials of knights, therefore you have a better chance to equalize a losing position with a knight

Read this article, which explains in which different positions knight is better and vice versa.
Knights or bishops—which is better? The article explains the strength and weekness of the knight and the bishop
.
Knights are best in closed and complex positions, while bishops shine in open and clear positions. The best thing, of course, is to know when to exchange a knight for a bishop or vice versa, depending on the strategic needs of the game.
