At a recent event I played I witnessed the following spectacle : 2 A class players were battling it out when one of them picked up his Q , reached across the board and touched his opponents bishop , then noticed the bishop was protected , said " oops , can't do that " and tried to put his Q back and make some other move . Ofcourse he was informed that the rules require him now to capture the B (if its a legal move ) with his Q , he has no other choice ! In a rage he stormed out of the room and slammed the door so hard he broke the door ! He went looking for a rule book and/or the TD to confirm the rule . The player in question is a senior and has been playing tournament chess for decades . There is NO excuse for him not knowing the rules of tournament chess imo .
