"learn to resign when totally outplayed"

I also had a game today against someone 80 points lower rated, where I was in an endgame up 2 pawns and my opponent wrote me "plz resign" and when I asked why, he just offered a draw. I have no idea what goes through these players` heads. No way he would have resigned if he had the advantage.

OH!, OH!  PEOPLE!  Here’s a tip!  Something I do before resigning in daily games.  Go check your opponent’s profile.  You can get information that comes in handy!  Check for time-out percentage, and for number of games the player has going.  Any player with 50 or more simultaneous games might time-out.  Ziryab knows what it’s like to have over 50 games going, especially if they’re mostly, 24 hour games.

Otherwise, I generally resign, unless my king is the last piece which I can move.  But, I don’t drag those games out on time.... yet, If there’s a chance for stalemate, insufficient material, or, repetition / 50 move draw proclamation possibilities, I like to see where it goes.  Like, if it’s King vs King & bishop, a lot of players might struggle to get a check mate, and you can proclaim a draw at 50 moves past the last pawn move.

I did recently, though, drag a guy out on time, who was beating me, out to the bitter end...

It’s a 3 day per move tournament where a guy (who’s rated about 300 points higher) lost our first game. Beat him in 9 moves, 10th move was checkmate. There are 8 players, and due to the weighted rating system, 949 ended up on top of the list, with the second lowest rating.

Our second game, took a long time, though I knew he would win.  I just liked, seeing my name on top of that list!

There is another possibility as well.  In game chat affects the situation, too.  I’ve got about 4 or 5 players with whom I’v also got on-going in game chats.  After awhile, several games, you start to develop a friendship.  At that point, neither player really cares.  It becomes more about the chat, in a way.

can't believe you @ gloating at your name on top of some dumb list! if you didn't deserve to be there, get over yourself, i'd rather hear you have 10 other reasons for dragging out a game than that, but as soon as you drag the word drag into it, you've kinda lost your mana

HA, they said that to get under your skin and it sure worked. They win - you lose regardless of any pointless chess score.

Hm?

Uh... I lost 0% of my matches. I can’t believe how dumb I am
now. Why can’t I just win a match? I mean why?

Most of my endgames are king vs king and two rooks

“learn to resign when totally outplayed” I think that’s good.

This topic suddenly reminded me of two quotes.

In the movie they're said by the same character, but we can give one to Ziryab and one to his opponent.

Ziryab's opponent (when he's winning): "You should admit your situation... there would be more dignity in it."

Ziryab (at the end of the game when Ziryab is winning): "Let me ask you something. If the rule you followed brought you to this... of what use was the rule?"

Nah. Correspondence chess is the only real chess.

I should say, correspondence chess sans engines.>>>

Don't think so, because you can get people who will spend 20 hours looking at one move. Or more. OTB with equal time is real chess.

I have enjoyed spending 20 hours on one move. Once, I spent the whole weekend going through every game ever published in Informant that had reached our position--about 150.>>

Yes, I'm sure, but the question was "what is real chess", not "what form of chess do you personally enjoy the most"! happy.png

I have to agree, a *lot* of players will struggle to mate with K + B vs. K.  I would have to say, without tooting my own horn too much, I might even hold a draw vs. Fischer, Kasparov, or Carlsen under such conditions ...

If that is the case, then wouldn't the player keep moving his pieces? How does stalling help a draw?

Whoooosh...

re: "real chess"

There's a case to be made for faster time controls, or even online ratings. Of course I prefer long time controls OTB, but even there the clock comes into play, and experienced players know that e.g. "perfect is the enemy of good" and "long think, wrong think"

Extremely fast speeds rely a lot on a brain's processing power and even coordination, so we can ignore those, but I wouldn't expect the 10 top rankings to be very different if games were played at G/60 or even G/30.

Real chess is a search for truth. That search is what I enjoy.

"Real chess" is a Troyan Horse for whatever format you think is best, stating otherwise is pretty much a No true Scotsman fallacy.

Avatar of Ziryab

Real chess, if chess is a sport, is blitz (especially drunk blitz).

Avatar of Optimissed

I don't think I'm interested in chess as a search for truth so much as chess as a means to happiness.
