Learning about the Game

Hey guys!

I'm pretty new to chess but I've been learning a lot and finally have signed up for an account here on chess.com. This morning I was reading something on the website and saw next to someone's name the term WFM. Upon googling the term I learned that it stands for Woman FIDE Master. My question is why is there a distinction between men and women? Are there different leagues for men and women like Men and Women's football (soccer for those of us in the U.S.). Thanks!

Women don't play in different "leagues" but since the participation gap between men and women is so large women have distinct titles so that they have more goals to work towards. It's sort of like an incentive to dedicate effort to chess
