Legs Opening

Does this opening have an official name?

Somehow this opening worked for me...It's unusual for me and opened the game up on both sides and closed it for my opponent...kind of...

I was determined to be aware of the whole board and wanted to have access to it...often I close the game down with dead ends and mounting problems...I missed a check mate in my previous game and went on to lose...this taught me a good lesson...and I tried to apply it here.

If you know your openings I'd love to know if this one is used at all and what your thoughts are please.

Serious answers and a bit of humorous banter is expected...please don't let me down.

I played this opening with 1.a4 first.

It works in your posted game, because your opponent doesn't challenge your queenside development and willingly castles long towards your advanced pawns.

I don't think a4 is rational, something unorthodox like b4 would probably achieve more, but it still doesn't look good either. But it does open your c1 bishop and doesnt leave the b4 square as vulnerable. g3 followed by Bg2 or d3 both look much better to me in the given game.

Of course its good to play your own style of game, but imo its best to leave the creative ideas for the middle game.

It's a reversed Sicilian - Najdorf where the pawn has gone one square too far. Cool

Still, playing e4 against the reversed Sicilian is an interesting idea, especially when Black doesn't try to play Bc5 -- if on move 20 Black had a bishop at c5, he could play 20... g4 and 21... g3 and do some serious damage.  Heck, even 23... Nxf6 (which is illegal) 24. Qe6 Rxh2 25. Kxh2 Qh7+ 26. Kg1 Rh8 is dangerous (possibly winning).

I really like your position after 11... O-O-O??  It's an excellent thinking exercise to consider how to start your attack from there.  What are your thoughts (what's the best plan and is b5 the best move)?

I really appreciate and like all your comments so far...thank you. Yes Paul, the 3.a4 move is my 'innovation' but I think my opponent played into my strengths here, especially by castling on the 'wrong' side...also...thank you for naming the first move of the opening.

What I have found is opening away from the king and keeping the centre closed for as long as possible gives me confidence early on. It's not really all about my opening here it's the opponents response which is more questionable perhaps...not wanting to take anything away from my opponent's game.

If 3.a4 is my innovation...I name this opening move: Legs Opening

More input is very welcome from knowledgeable chess minds...no one has yet commented on the new proposed opening move title...at the very least I do expect some light humour to tickle me...perhaps the comedic USA have all gone to bed...or not yet woken? Laughing

Is 3.a4 your innovation? What are some of the ideas behind it? At first sight, it doesn't look like the best use of a tempo at this stage in the opening. Not only does it not develop a piece, it gives up control of the b4 square. I guess 3.a4 makes it a bit harder for Black to play b5, but that's a small return on a wasted move and a permanently weakened square. It seems to me that after 3...Nf6 Black is already at least equal

These were exactly my thoughts. Seems like a waste of a move (too early) and weakens b4 too much. Black might try a5 and Na6/c6 to b4 for a great outpost.

We're a bunch of chess nerds here, a pun like "Legs Opening" goes right over our heads

haha.  reminds me of when I told a friend "I'm sorry but you're about to be mated" and he said "wow, I never thought I'd be so disappointed to hear a girl say that".  I was like...huh? what?  ohhhhhh.

If Black plays an early d6, then the a4/c4 combination isn't a total disaster.  Otherwise, I think White is in serious trouble since b4 is unplayable (and White will have an extremely difficult time advancing c5 without b4 or d4).  I wouldn't be surprised if 1. c4 e5 2. a4 c5? gives Black a strong position either.

Thanks again Paul...and Afa (you Afa 2 av a laugh sometimes!?)...and Dan.... I will take some time to think about your insightful and very much appreciated comments...they really are carefully thought out. Just been looking at some Grand Master stuff...wow...

...and just returned from Mass (it's the Epiphany) to read your comments and I was truly hoping/praying I was being serious as well as playful but without being smutty or offensive...it's difficult to strike the right balance in text but I think I got away with it...this time. Innocent Wink

Your comments are always welcome.
