Thank you for your analysis offer I-AM-YOUR-GRANDPA

Hope the trolls won't discourage you.

This is the best game of blitz I have played so far, years ago on a different site. Let me know what you think of it.

I have a suspicion the opening i played was not 100% solid, but it turned out well I guess Laughing

Thank you very much for that extensive analysis, I learned a lot from that!

And yes, cramped is the right word for my position at that time Embarassed.  I also agree that my opponent had a few strangely inaccurate moves in there that allowed to to start that devastating attack.

My best guess is he underestimated my willingness to decisively  attack at that point after witnessing my somewhat defensive and suboptimal opening :D

What do you think of the Scotch Game? I like the opening but the more I study it the more it seems that I should move on to another opening as it seems a little too straight-forward for me at times and I think black has too much of a chance for an easy draw with good play.

I kind of want to keep it in 1.e4 and I don't really care for the Ruy Lopez. Is the Giuoco Piano going to run into the same problem?

I want to be able to lead the game into complicated positions as well.

What opening would you suggest?

What are some of the good variations as well as their typical pawn structure, sacrifice ideas, etc...? Can you please give a brief overview of these things if you happen to suggest an opening?

I'm looking for a new "pet opening" since I don't think the Scotch Game is the best fit for the later progressions of my game.

youre welcome Nixda, glad i could help.

@ K Brown:

the scotch game is a fine opening, depending on how you play it. im no expert in it but i know that in the classical variations black can force an endgame B+K vs Rook +2 pawns (or was it rook + B+K vs 2 rooks+2 pawns?)  which is considered to be a draw. you can avoid this though by playing the line with Nbd2, b3, Bb2 and long castle which gives white some serious attack and wins most games when black doesnt know how to answer it. Do you know which line I mean?

The Ruy Lopez would be my suggestion for you. In my opinion its one of the few lines which gives black some problems. here the first moves:

whites next move will most likely be d4 and then he usually groups his knight on b1 to g3 via Nd2-Nf1-Ng3. White normally plays on the kingside, tries to get a knight to f5, plays his bishop to g5 and when black plays g6 white can often play Nh2-Ng4 and even Rook back to f1 followed by f4. white can get some decent attack when he knows what hes doing. and as a tip, nearly never take on e5 after you play d4, mostly closing the center with d5 is the best thing to do in attempt to get the above mentioned kingside attack.

the guico piano is playable but really just leads to an equal position if black knows how to play it. the evans gambit is the aggressive try in this line with 4.b4 which can win you some nice games against unprepared opponents. at higher levels it wont score so well though.

same with the kingsgambit...

I really recommend you the Ruy Lopez, the good thing with it is that you can play it at all levels, so its a life time opening. but of course you need to look at some theory there, but mainly the ideas are important.

"you can avoid this though by playing the line with Nbd2, b3, Bb2 and long castle which gives white some serious attack and wins most games when black doesnt know how to answer it. Do you know which line I mean?"

Perhaps you mean that line!? Or maybe you are talking about a line resulting from the Goring Gambit which I haven't realy experimented with. Alas, you are probably talking about something different...

I-AM-YOUR-GRANDPA

yes i believe this is the line, i recently saw a Polish IM play this and thought it is very interesting. Im not quite sure how to play further here but i believe you play g3 and f4, put your bishop to g2, get your queen to d2 or c3 and play Qa5 which is unpleasent for black. whites advantage is a structural one. im no expert in this line but you might take a look at it cause i find it really interesting. regards

K_Brown

I'll study it. Thanks.

I-AM-YOUR-GRANDPA

hi, its definetely well playable on your level i guess. i saw this before and i think its really hard to refute i believe. whats the name? i forgot it :s
