linking chess with real life

I'm kinda new to chess, I mean, I used to play when I was a kid but never took it seriously, I'm kinda curious though, do more advanced players link real life situations with chess tactics?or does learning more about it improve your problem solving skills or way of thinking in general? because for me it's more like a game that has it's own rules away from the real world.
