LIVE CHESS - When ratings plummet

Hi there

Something I have noticed playing live chess - I have pushed forward 100 rating points (1200 to 1309) only to drop back the same (below 1200!), then forward another 150 (to 1392 at my peak).

Now I'm having to claw my way over 1250 again.

I also notice many other players suffering the same. I just beat a chap (me at 1224, he at 1269, but 1690 at his peak) who seems to have suffered this as well.

Does anyone else here lurch like this?

I wonder why...

happens to me often.  how well I play blitz chess depends alot on my mood at the time & how centered/focused I am.  I've realized after 10 years of chess though that blitz is like a treadmill where most players stay stuck at the same/similar level forever.  which is why I like long tournament chess & coorespondence much better (though blitz is still fun once in awhile).

Joe, over the last 100 games you have played in live chess your rating spread has been between 1195 and 1310 (this is not taking into account the differing games Quick blitz and Long so the spread across each is probably considerably less)

I think you will find that your rating seems to 'surge' because of the large number of games that you play in a relitivly short period of time (especially if you compare this to your online rating) rather than any strange occurances or large jumps in rating.

Narz, your spread for the last 150 games you have played is 143 points (low 1505 hegh 1648), again I think it is the large number of games in a short period that is tricking you into thinking that your rating is jumping about.

Cheers

Well, a part of amatuer blitz chess is luck. It's no big deal, and everyone has bad days. Just play your best.
