As a matter of interest are you more inclined to say gg if you win or lose? This is actually a serious question. I tend to write a comment more frequently if I won, but with some difficulty. If I lose I tend to expect the victor to extend the courtesy to me. I dunno, but that just feels right. What do others think?

I always type "good game", win or lose. I don't always take losses well, but any lingering resentment is expressed less by what I type and more by what body part I type it with.

Toes. Toes on the keyboard are disgusting. Unless one does not have fingers in which case it is heroic.

I've complemented a player on a particular move which saved the game for him. I had (what I thought was) an excellent attack, and overlooked one move which saved it for him. That I later lost was disappointing, but he outplayed me after that and had out analysed me for that particular move.
"gg" by itself is a little formulaic, I think. If I do comment in general terms I'm more likely to write "Thanks for the game" or "interesting opening" or something less generic.

Online chess is no different than OTB chess. I say "good game" and good luck" no matter the outcome. Just because your hiding behind a monitor and no one can see you doesnt mean those greetings suddenly become insults.

For me, when I lose. Although I normally say it after all games, if they haven't legged it by then.
