Logging off when your losing.

I know sometimes we have connection trouble, everyone does. However, if your going to log off in the middle of a game please message the other person.

If you feel that there is no way to win, resign, don't force an adjournment on the other person.

Very rude and childish, this is not a video game where you can press reset and start all over again.

Thank you

Chill out dude! This is not a video game...correct, but also this is not live chess. This is turn based chess...the modern equivalent to postal chess. Some players have 20, 40,...100 games on the go simultaneously. A goodbye message is impractical and unnecessary here. What happens when your wife calls you for dinner? "Hang on darling...I'vejust got to say goodbye to my 46 opponents"

"!!!SMASH!!!"... that's your dinner hitting the floor.

Relax fellow...you'll win that game in the end, and when that annoying opponent comes knocking for another game, politely refuse. Wink

There is an indicater there you are offline.  If you have noticed itis like a cell phone receiver that you pull out at the top of your phone.  It is flashing and this indicates where or not you are online.  Therefore it is not necessary to message your opponent.  By looking for the indicator they can tell if you are online or not.

I think he might be refering to online, real-time chess rather than here at chess.com, and with that, I agree with him.  With the other points you guys brought up, I agree with you as well.

He's talking about forcing an adjournment, so I guess he's talking about the "online chess" at Chess.com. In the live chess section games are automatically adjourned when you disconnect. Also, does anyone even play live chess on Chess.com? The last time I checked there was no one else online.

That indicator doesn't really work the way it should, at least not for me. When an opponent goes offline I have to navigate away and back to see the resultant change. I agree that some opponents can be annoying. I ran into a bunch that realize I like to move fast so they log in, make a move and log out like shaddow snipers or something and that disrupts the flow of the game. I move fast to make it obvious I'm not cheating. But Psychology and associated head games will always be in chess and we will never really do away with that unfortunately.

I personally think that, if you decide to play a game with a rate of "1 move per 3 days" then it is unreasonable to expect your opponent to play moves like its a 5 minute blitz game. In a game which the time controls are all moves in 90 minutes, it's highly unlikely that you are going to be moving at 100 miles an hour and play all your moves in 5 minutes, staring incredulously at your opponent who is using more than 1 minute for each move. Some players do like quick games on here, which is normally shown when they play 1 move per day. Some of us like longer games, 5 or 7 days per move. I often log on to make my moves and then log off, not because i want to "snipe" but because I tend to be busy and can;t spend so much time on the site...

sorry but i don't see how logging off a game when one is losing can be associated with psychological head games ..

Hey, my turn to say chill out. I was just trying to get a read on the mindset of the original poster. I don't give a rats a** if you snipe or not. Do what you think you need to do to win. Go all out.Anything can be seen as a headgame by somebody because just about everything is used that way on occassion If I gave the impression I was offended, well, I'm sorry. I guess I need to learn to shut up here

That's highly unecessary. You don't need to tell them.

Even  though you can't see the other person while playing an online chess game, you have to be polite.

one thing to consider ... even though you see them as logging out when they are losing, they may see it  as something else .. for example; a family emergency, a call to work ...  you don't know whats happening .. perhaps patience is in order..

After all, its not live chess, whether your game is 24 hours, 3 days, 7 or 14.. its there time to do as they wish .... regardless of status of play

Thank you for your mostly knid arguments, there were some I had not considered at the time.

I've had moments when I've made a serious blunder, leading me to realize that I'm too tired to play well. I can see how my signing off (and going to sleep) at that time could be construed as an attempt to prolong the game, but that's something I would never consider doing. If I'm going to lose I don't see any point in losing slooooowly.
