Lonely people play chess

In any case, many top players are married with kids.

The only thing even slightly relating to friendships & relationships I've heard that chess affects is a professional GMs sex-life because apparently the sexual stress is good to help chess performance but other than that there's nothing 100% concrete in what you're saying because an example is Magnus Carlsen talked about how his friends would try to beat him at chess while he was drunk and they were sober so just because you play chess dosen't automatically mean you have no social life

Human beings are a naturally social species.  We need only look at our primate cousins to see that.  We generally enjoy the company of others.

because the only GM I can think of who was not lonely but socially awkward is Bobby Fischer which is explainable due to him showing signs of Aspergers Syndrome but other than Bobby no GM had a bad social life, health-wise obviously you have a lot of alcoholics and smokers but not extremely lonely GMs

That is true, but it runs against our nature.

Hermits, loners, and ascetics are rare.

I think people who do more than 2-3 hour of chessing per day  are addicted to chess.

You are getting your dopamine released by unrewarding activity so yes if you feel that chess or any other kind of hobby hampering your social life put them off.My experience to cut off a nasty habit is by not having a total access to them.By the way most of the so called lonely people are lonely by choice overall. If you are social you will manage to find friends in an unknown city and fast.So chess makes me lonely or I am lonely so I play chess? Not a tough riddle like hen and eggs. It's both.

Well, Harry Nelson Pillsbury was supposed to have died of syphilis.

we dont need anything from a poverty 3rd world country, all those Indians who are doctors in America is because we trained them, educated them, etc...something your country could not do. We have plently of White, African-American, Asian doctors so your point is invalid.

Hary Nelson Pillsbury was an American "grandmaster" (before the term was popularized) who won the great 1895 Hastings tournament, at the age of 23, making him a contender for Steinitz or Lasker.

Pillsbury then played in the stronger 1895 St. Petersburg tournament, which featured five of the top-six finishers at Hastings.

It is thought that Pillbury was infected by a prostitute in Russia.  Ergo, he was not a "lonely" chess player.

The truly lonely play chess alone.

Going to prostitutes doesn't have to equal not being lonely.

At least for example Anand, Kramnik, Svidler, Radjabov, Kasparov and Karpov.

I do magic on the street for money - so I look like a friendly person since I have an easy time making dumb jokes and talking to strangers, but I have very few friends and do very little with my life besides improve upon a group of insanely difficult skills that I enjoy. It's a personality thing.....people wonder how on earth I read so many books and know so many obscure things, but it's pretty simple - while you're out there'having fun' and whatnot, I'm at home studying like crazy.

I doubt I will have a happy ending.....but the middle isn't so bad.

I can tell from your writing, and the chats we've had, that you are a personable, bright, driven, young woman.

I am actually quite honored to have met someone like you here.  In some ways, you remind me of my younger self.  We're rare, you and me!  And not to be unmodest, I think I have done okay for myself.  I would rather have avoided a lot of the stress and resultant heart disease, but we are on this Earth to be happy.

So be happy! :-) <3
