Looking to take the next step

Hi,  I've been playing chess on this site for a while now and think that I would like to take the next step and actually learn some legitimate theory.  I am considering getting a book or possibly buying a program(the only one I've ever really heard of is chessmaster...and I don't really know how good it is).  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to go about taking my play to the next level.  I'd like to think that I'm at the higher level of beginner right now; perhaps even intermediate in longer games when I take the time to really think about my moves.  Buy anyway, I just wanted to get peoples opinion on the best ways to improve my game.

Books and training software are extremely important. However, playng games with experienced players who can analyze your game really helps. Chessmaster is a great program with plenty of training options. If you find any titles I may have them in pdf form (I've got about 184 chess books, all them in pdf files, except my physical chess books).
