Losing streaks in live chess

Alright, out of nowhere I came apon a giant losing streak since I hit 1450 and now I'm down to almost 1360. This has happened over the course of 4 days, and I don't want to lose any more games!!! Out of my past 15 games I've won only 3.

Does anybody have any tips for overcoming this?? It's proven to be extremely frustrating hence this is the first real negative progress in my live standard rating.

Well, you should stop caring about your points really ... Besides that, ... pick an opening, study it and play it in every game from now on. That's how I got better.

I already study an opening, I'm just as good as you and we basically have the same ratings. I need an effective way to overcome these losses...

These might help

1. Try to identify patterns in your losses e.g. were some of those losses because you left peices hanging without realising or didn't see a mate in 2, didn't calculate an exchange accurately etc.

2. Try to play a longer game i.e. if you play 15 min games, try to play 20 or 30 min games for a while. Get your mojo back and then start playing your 15 min live chess again.

Good luck!

just took a hit with blitz rating from over 1200 to 1113.  All of sudden I can't win a game.  For me it is remembering what a fight it is for the smallest advantages.  I tend to take winning for granted and just develop without a correct plan or proper board perspective.  don't watch tv or eat, and try and relax.

For me the biggest thing is for some reason when I am playing alot of online chess I cannot play live for shnit.  not sure why this is but I lose my edge big time if I don't just play live...

I have just broken a losing streak today that has cost me maybe 70 points of rating. If you're thinking about losing you lose.

Turn your focus (all of it) onto your opponent's game and start to become analytical once more, instead of trying to "find the right strategy". Your opponent GIVES you the right strategy when he opens, by showing you what his weaknesses are. If you are focussing on your own weaknesses (or even strengths) you miss all that information, and that is why the streak continues. Turn your attention outward once again, and see all those weaknesses.

If you are not enjoying it, and just getting angry (I get angry a LOT when I lose) then take a break and come back when you feel excited about playing, not desperate to claw back points. When you feel the sense of adventure and interest in what your opponent is doing and how you will usurp his plans, then it is time to play once more.

Don't even worry about it: don't let it steal your mind and 'bang', you'll come up with the moves.

Yes, I do live on hope a bit. They talk about 'hope chess' and 'guess chess' but I figure that all players had to at some time hope and guess. Bobby Fischer said that one day he was just really good so I live with that hope really.

The 'Iron Logician' said it was about analysis. Kasparov said, "In the final analysis it's about piece play: and what get's in the way of the pieces- the pawns." Tal said you have to drag them into the deep dark forest where there is only one way out. A TEDex talk on the internet by a kid said "STOP LEARNING and start thinking."

You have to get the Heavy Pieces in and as in life you basically have to stop from getting in your own way. In Martial Arts they call it 'crossing up' e.g. when you block your bishop in etc...

I think you will find that it is basic principles that you just forget.. one move and it's game over: just like fighting- one punch is a knockout!

Apparently trying too hard is an amatuers mistake so don't even worry about it is the advice I've got from my elders... Someone can be just that little bit better to spin you out... SOME SAY FRUSTRATION IS A BOUNDARY SO JIM MORRISON WOULD SIMPLY SAY TO 'BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE,....YEHHHHHHH!"

ACDC would say "It's a long way to the shop if you wanna sausage roll.."

Money Mouth

In Kung Fu we learnt there are 5 steps to Chi-Gung.

Focus/ Relax/ Realise Chi/ Direct Chi/ Rejuvenate Chi

the sifu proved this to me by asking how I like to relax. I said I like to grab a beer and put my feet up and watch the Simpsons: he said, "See, you had to focus on how to relax before you could relax."

-->What did the iron logician say again??

- apparently Botvinnik was the first champion to look at self analysis in any serious sense!!

Lastly, Kasparov wrote a book how life imitates chess. In it he discusses the second law of entropy and how all things, including systems, break down.

It's system against system....

Failing all that learn the concept of THE MONSTER KNIGHT and don't look back! Music helps!!

The best way to recover I guess is to study chess, come back and beat as many oponents as you can.

Bobby Fisher, for example, after losing some game (?) hadn't participated in competitive chess for a long time. Later he came back for a 'kill'. Of course we are not at this level, but still it applies to us.

I have reached a platue of around 1450. It normally goes up to 1500 and then drops to 1430-1440, before bouncing back. Conclusion- my chess skill is not imporving. At this stage we need to start reading books.

Take some break. I once played so much chess that it really was just too much. I had a bullet rating above 2100 and a blitz rating around 2000 but one day I lost so many games in a row, that I finally got down to 1800 rating points in bullet. Now I am trying to improve my tactics rating ( at least 50 points a day) and I finally reached a rating of 2400. Just try to do some tactics before playing live chess and you will see that its much easier to win in live games.
