Low rank players don't draw

I've been in more than a couple low rank games where I found myself having to force a draw (by repeatedly checking the opponent in 2 places) because they would reject the draw offer in an obvious drawing position. I've even had one opponent that forced 40 some moves before accepting the draw (he had 3 squares where he could move out of check)...

Why do you think lower-ranked players don't agree to a draw? I find nothing bad about drawing against a simmilar ranked opponent, and would definetly agree to a draw so I can move ahead and play more games...

I would think low-ranked players are learning the game, so what is obvious to an experienced player is not yet so for the novice.

You can force a draw if a position has been repeated at least 3 times already (known as a 3-fold repetition, which is an established chess rule that perpetual check falls under).
Also, the position doesn't have to be repeated 3 times in a row for a 3-fold repetition to apply...you merely have to reach the same position 3 times (understand the difference?). So next time your opponent refuses to accept a draw in a position where he obviously can't escape perpetual check, click on the 'draw' button after the position has been repeated 3 times and the server should force a draw. That will save you from having to needlessly play out 30+ more pointless moves.

iamdeafzed, I did not know that, thanks for the tip!

What trysts said.  They're probably learning the game so they either don't realize that the game is a draw or when they should accept one.

They may not even realize a draw's been offered if they're new to the site

As a fairly active class player, in OTB I've noticed that draw percentages are really low in the lower ranks. Over my last 100 real games I've had one draw!!

A big part of this is that class players really are still not playing top level chess, so even when they are playing well they are still both making subtle mistakes which leave chances on the board which a GM would be quick to not do. So unless you are forcing the repetition of the position, it is often to the advantage of the other player to play for a result. After all, you might not repeat . . .

probably because they didn't take the time to learn everything about fundamental chess endings. a lot of that stuff isn't really very obvious or intuitive and it's easy to go wrong.
