Low rated player plays “brilliant” move

This is not an accusation but I just don’t understand the criteria for a “brilliant” move so hoping that someone who does understand can give their opinion.

I just finished a daily game with someone who has a pretty low rating and they pulled out a move that was classed as brilliant.

What’s the most likely scenario here...lucky, genuine brilliant move or using an engine?

Even a chess-playing baboon could stumble upon a brilliant move every so often. Granted, higher rated players play more of them, but even the lowest-rated players will stumble into a few amidst a sea of blunders.

A brilliant move is a move that is not immediately obvious, is probably a game-changer, and requires the engine to search at a very high depth in order to find.

Thanks, I guess there’s no way to know for sure. It’s what makes me reluctant to play untimed games

Did they win the game?

Sometimes when I sac a piece and the computer says brilliant move, I just didn't see if the piece could be taken. I would not be worried at all.

T’was a draw

I'm about 650 elo and my opponent played a brilliant move. Couldn't have been engine, his accuracy overall was pretty bad and he played sort of fast.

I am terrible (498),' but in something like 250 games, even I have made 2 moves labelled brilliant.. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.

For newer/low rated players, brilliant moves are much more freely awarded, eg. a basic queen/rook sacrifice mating pattern could earn a brilliant (that's the only reason I have gotten any, lol). So he might have gotten lucky, or it could have been more obvious than at first glance. What sort of move was it exactly?

I am a 1700 and i barely ever Get brilliant move

I have had 3 brilliant moves, and all of them seemed semi forced to me. I was not reinventing the game. I think AI’s view of brilliant can be pretty light at times. What was his overall accuracy for the game?

I suspect this when you don't understand the idea behind their moves, but then they suddenly are totally winning - and you can't do anything - that's how programs are built, unless it's a closed / semi-closed position, or "a fortress", and other nonsense [like, if you have a queen and the comp. have 3 bishops of the same color - he thinks it's equal until you're close to checkmate him]. In order to accuse of compuer-use, we need to know how comps work. [most of them are just probably Stockfish, not Rybka or Lila - which are actually smart].

It is not an hard thing to achieve brilliant moves... A "lower rated" player could spot the brilliant move if they focus on the board. If you still suspect if a member is cheating, you can report them. Chess.com will take appropriate action needed. And cheating related forums can be discussed in Cheating forum (https://www.chess.com/club/cheating-forum) club. Not here.
