interesting article, looks like 1|60 actually would be considered rapid.

what time control would 1|60 be considered?
bullet
*sigh
Technically no; 1 min is the base time, but 60 seconds times 40 adding in (check my link for nominial time and why *40) adds 40 minutes, so that the time of the game calculated is then 41 minutes and this is "rapid" currently. This 1/60 is an unusual time control, so good luck finding any willing to accept that, but whatever...

*chess.com rapid people I don't want to hear how 10/0 is considered blitz for some people...
If I was to play 5/2 that is blitz so I was thinking maybe 6/5 or something is that blitz or rapid in chess.com. Or is 10/0 the least minimum time control for rapid
This one is close to 10 minutes when adding to the base time, but it comes out to 9 min and some decimal if I calculated correctly, so this would still be considered "blitz."

I appreciate that I'd learn more from longer time controls but 10 mins or less seems like a fairer challenge to me. If you go much longer then I suspect that how much effort a player puts in becomes a factor.

I feel like in longer games if you have an interesting position, choosing the longer time control is worth it because you have more time to think. However, if you've got a boring one it's like wish this was blitz because something crazy can happen there whereas here, winning is highly unlikely. I think it depends on the position.

nice article but a little bit confusing. So what would be the smallest time control that would be called rapid?

the amount of effort a player puts is always a factor

Apparently the lowest is 10 minutes 9 minutes is considered Blitz still.
*without increment being a factor

10 min is the smallest time control for current chess.com Rapid. That one is easy xD It is determining the smallest time control for blitz or bullet which is toughest because of obscure time controls with total times just below the barrier to the next time control category.
A.1
A ‘Rapid chess’ game is one where either all the moves must be completed in a fixed time of more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes for each player; or the time allotted plus 60 times any increment is of more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes for each player.
B.1
A ‘blitz’ game is one where all the moves must be completed in a fixed time of 10 minutes or less for each player; or the allotted time plus 60 times any increment is 10 minutes or less.
