Magnus Carlsen -is he finished?

Hmmm...

I was wrong. I thought Carlsen had suffered a slight but steady decline since his 2881 rating in June, 2014. He did drop slightly, but was back up to 2876 in May 2015.

His current live rating is 2835, more than 50 points off his high. That is a significant, but hardly irreversible drop. He will be the favorite to win Wijk aan Zee. I expect he'll be +2850 before the World Championship in November of next year.

Magnus Carlsen is currently playing in an inter-galactic chess tournament in the Delta Quadrant against some of the best players in the Universe.

The Magnus Carlsen that is the subject of speculation is a clone that is experiencing some programming issues.

Once the real Magnus Carlsen is finished putting those aliens in their place, he will return and make the doom-mongers eat their words.

FIDE 2833 at the age 24, Magnus is clearly a washed-up old man.  Innocent

He'll turn 25 by the end of this month. Old age has got to be setting in by now.

Yes, Carlsen's clearly gone, I expect his rating to fall in the 2200 range somewhere, maybe 2231. Patzer can't even win every tournament, really disgusting stuff.

When you consider how tough the competition is, I find it incredible how far ahead he has been. It is natural to have others coming into the frame. Of course losing as he has done in the EC is surprising, but he also struggled at the olympics in Tromsø. Also, it is just a few weeks since he became world rapid chess champion again. He possibly experiments too much, rarely relying on preparations as opposed to others. I think that is great, and he seems too much in love with chess not to fight hard in order to stay on top.

Eventually we all get bored of everything. :) One day there will be no forums here (and on other places on the Internet) not because they are gone but because People will be bored. Remember when that day comes you read it here first. Entropy is coming! :)

Name one.

Carlsen's rating drop is not that materially important.

He is yet to be beaten in a match.

He has a psychological hold over most of the top 10 players.

For example Anand is clearly awed when playing against Carlsen,as he was against Kasparov.

Carlsen strikes fear into most of the top 10 much like Kasparov did in his heyday.

Carlsen will probably retain his title for at least the next 4 years.

The new generation will be less intimidated then the current crop.

Most of the current Candidates Qualifiers have negative records against Carlsen.

Carlsen in match play....one against one in series of games....is still a tough preposition for the top players...

Perhaps Aronian or Topalov have the best chance, though I feel Carlsen will prevail over either.

His biggest threat will emerge from China......possibly Wei Yi..

Do players playing very aggressively have the best chances against Carlsen.

I recall last year Nakamura, playing aggressively, having good positions against the world champ

Naiditch's win also comes to mind

I don't know who "Carlson" is, unless you're talking about the presidential candidate.

But Caruana has not overtaken Carlsen. In fact, nobody has.

lol at petrosianpupil, thanks to chess engines, cheating is rampant and so many players no longer play on their merits. should performance enhancing drugs be allowed for training purposes in sports, so long as they are not used in competition ?

Carlsen still only managed a draw against a player 200 points below him who was playing black. With this tournament nearly over, it has been pretty costly for Carlsen as far as ELO and reputation is concerned..... Nonetheless I do agree with others that Carlsen is the best thing that has happened to chess in recent years. Even if his dominance has waned, as WC he has boosted chess the world over, especially in his home country. I wouldn't want to see him go anytime soon...

Finished?? You'd be a fool to predict either way. He climbed to the summit. Once there he failed to realize to remain on top a greater effort is required. He is Young! Could well be making the same mistakes we all made. Distracted? Appears obvious. Will he recover? Or seen his last days? A possibility if he doesn't pull it together I'd say. One thing for sure, he needs to lose the silly grin I see in news pics.

PS, Seems like the moment he got the "Mozart" label. ..that was the kiss of death.

That's kinda just factually incorrect lol. I know for the program 60 Minutes, at least, he was called the Mozart of chess, at age 21... well a few years later was when he broke Kasparov's record and got to 2880.
