It puzzles me how something like this can get so many people to trash their trousers in panic. Propaganda! Politics! Left wing! This really hurts my self esteem as an oppressed white male!

Saying no to racism isn't politics, it's common ethics. It's like saying no to bullying. Chess having black and white pieces makes it an easy metaphor for the cause, and that's about it. It's a nice message, not an attack against your precious game or conservative values.

Chess is just two armies with different uniforms. There are no racial subliminal messages. The game either exists in your sub-culture or it don't. 
We live in an age where people put race, gender, left or right, individualism or collectivism (etc) at the heart of their identity politics.
