Magnus vs World predictions?

This event is going to be good for chess. I'm sure it's going to be covered by a lot of the World's newspapers and press(if it hasn't done so already in certain countries.) But in the U.S. , chess is frowned upon as a professional endeavour. You have the best player since Super GM Garry Kasparov and a future World Champion, unless the world gets nuked in the near future. So, this is a great thing for chess, and I am looking forward to it immensely. Whether the World loses or not, who cares, it's going to be a blast. Cool

If chess gets more exposure at the end of the day, I'm all for it. What doesn't revolve around money these days? If they want to promote their brand through a chess game, I say "good on them".

If they make a little money in their pocket and as you say Kenneth, chess gets noticed more, then it's a wonderful thing. I would LOVE to have a TV network, sponsored by FIDE or whoever, about upcoming tournaments, chess politics, especially with Anatoly Karpov lately, with live coverage and so on. I doubt that would happen. Only in a perfect world.

Do we have the chance to give our opinion to the GMs or jus agree with what Naka, Judit suggests us.

That's pretty awesome. Can't wait to see who they play on the site!!

Avatar of heinzie

I guess they were sponsored by G-Star Raw. But I think titled players receive free accounts anyway if they propose to behave constructively

This "best attacking effort" of which Magnus's explanation was shamelessly fastforwarded, was it this game...? (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1268980)

I do hope they will play some games on this site, and that it's not just "window dressing" because chess.com is the host site. Can anyone in admin tell us if there will be games?

Magnus will be beaten by us, THE WORLD :D

Avatar of Azukikuru

Magnus will win. "The World" will only be as good as the best of the GMs, and since Magnus is #1, he'll have no problem winning. Especially since, as someone pointed out, he has more thinking time per move.

Oh, and the voting system is just fine. It eliminates the possibility of, say, a Bongcloud bandwagon. And if some unrated chess genius did come up with the best move over all three GMs, as Kacparov suggests, it wouldn't do any good with his one vote against the thousands of "better informed" ones. The majority of the voting players would need to be better than the three GMs for that to work - and what are the odds of that (unless, of course, they use engines, which is just blah anyway).

magnus gets 1 min.

the gms get 1 min to make their suggestions.

the world gets 90 seconds to vote.

repeat. :-)

Who will act as the butler? Nigel Short?!

Avatar of ozzie_c_cobblepot

So in other words it's unlikely that we'll see a Caro-Kann

Avatar of ChessMarkstheSpot

LOL! Supposedly he doesn't even have to touch the pieces on the board. The butler does everything. He is going to be pampered in that suite. What a lucky guy. Hopefully, he'll have as much as we will. Cool

I don't like the voting system.

1.90% 1-0   9.9%  1/2-1/2 0.1% 0-1

2.50-60

3.idk

Voting system was timed so that no chess engine has enough time to do a decent or exhaustive evaluation of the three GM move suggestions.

But I'm sure that some engine players will still try. Yell

Well the folks here at chess.com sure has a lot to say about this match...this is great... this is how interest is stimulated about the sport we love. For those that speculate about Carlsen's motives, and the amount of "greenback" he will surely receive, remember that this is the #1 player in the world...do you really feel that he should not be paid anything? At this time in our history everything is marketed and monetized...and by doing this, it does put the spotlight on chess. Nothing is wrong with this event, we should celebrate that we have this opportunity...and take part. Personally, I will be in New York at this time, and hope to see it live.

Actually the second picture of the 80s Hulk looks more like Kasparov when he's very happy. Wink

Which one of Nakamaru, Polgar and Legrave have the best record v Carlsen?
