how the hell are you supposed to win chess games then? you cant win if your opponent plays perfectly.
Was there any reason for Gelfand to exchange the Queens? I am sure I would have lost this endgame too and I am in no way comparing myself to him, but if I get to an endgame with a disadvantage, I will try to keep the queens on the board as long as possible. am I missing something?

Trysts seems to be posting all the games after they're done in her thread: The Candidates Tournament! (page 25)
Chessbomb.com also has all the games.

Aha, thanks one and all! And yeah, I would've kept queens on too (except it still doesn't look like White has much).

It's probably a draw with the queens on, but white has quite a bit of work to do, and Gelfy's clock was already ticking badly.
It's not fair to claim that you would have saved this ending, simply because you would never reach such an ending- Magnus would have gobbled some fat wood way before the endgame.

Quoting myself: "I am sure I would have lost this endgame too". I am saying I am sure I would have lost this endgame and you accuse me of saying I would have saved it?!
I am just wondering why in such an endgame, someone would exchange queens. Was there something specific Gelfand was afraid of? A particular line that is problematic.

Close encounter of the 3rd kind
During my working days I use 3 monitors on my desk. Today was a free day for me and I kept one open (via Livestream - choice of the organizers) to continuously look at Gelfand - Carlsen. It is very different to look at Magnus during a game, I think, as it was to look at similar superior players like f.i. Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov. Talking body language. Magnus never looks excited, disturbed or stressed. At some times he stretches out in his chair, taking more distance from the board, like Bobby also could. In general at moments everything is under full control.
During the press conference after the game, the same. 'Yeah, it went such and so, could have gone differently, so what; yeah, might be, this thing with the queens; tomorrow free day, no nothing special, I heard about a nice Danish restaurant in the neighbourhood, I'll check it out."
And Boris Gelfand - a friendly guy I personally met twice - sat there at the table completely bewildered, like a human that just had a close encounter of the 3rd kind.
Yes, he has a fantastic temperament for high stakes competition. Others like Anand and Kramnik seem to be the same. I haven't seen many interviews with Aronian, so not sure about him. In contrast Ivanchuk is a bundle of nerves. I get the impression if someone coughed loudly behind him he'd jump out of his chair.
