Manners on chess.com

Hi chess.com fans,

After registering on this website I started to play. On the second game, after winning in a clear manner, my opponent insulted me.

Then the several games followed and I kept receiving such feedback, and only two persons have responded to my gg.

Now I suppose that is because people over here tend to take very seriously these points, that should reflect the strength of play of one.

I guess the solution would be to play unrated, but then there are not many with whom to play... and to turn off the chat seems very rude.

Chess.com shoudl be a great friendly place where people meet to have fun and learn chess related stuff...

Any suggestions? How canwe stop this.

Lots of adolescent behavior on this site.  It is a shame that so many are rude and insulting.  This seems most prevalent in the lower levels of blitz and bullet.  The longer time controls seem to attract a more mature player.  I've never had anything but polite exchanges on correspondence chess (although a few haven't wanted to chat).  3 day time controls, of course, aren't for everyone.  The easiest thing to do is just put the player on your blocked list, have a good laugh at how silly insulting a fellow chess player is, and move on to your next game.

If someone is using profanity or otherwise crossing the line, you can of course take a screenshot and send it to the staff.  The miscreant could have his play restricted or even be tossed from the site.  Usually they just end up making a new account and are back the next day though.  Pity that common courtesy is so uncommon these days.

Perhaps I just fortunate, but the overwhelming majority of my opponents have been honorable and sporting.

Same here. Opponents have been polite, except I think beating me is inherently rude ;-)

Hm. In my games, nobody has insulted me yet.

(Except maybe someone who wrote 'slt' at the beginning. I don't know what that means Tongue Out)

Find it hard to believe no one has called you a (language - MOD)

I've never received any insults in my blitz games.

However, my opponents may have just been laughing too much TOO insult me.

@baddog - send me a game invite, I would be happy to change your excellent ont-insulted record.Laughing

How many blitz games have you played?

Anonymity on the internet has always enabled this sort of behavior. One option is to play more games with opponents who demonstrate courtesy.

I sort of wonder why poor sports play at all. If one takes losing hard there are less frustrating ways to pass time.

Strangely, I didn't use any untoward language above; was some power-hungry mod making a joke.  I wonder if anyone has stories of moderators abusing their power

gotta love those time wasters..why do they even bother to play if they start losing and just quit?

You can disable chat in live games.  That's what I do.

After the game, if I lose, (if I have time) I usually go to my opponent's profile window and leave a note "Thank you for the game."  If I win, I don't leave a note because that may come across like I am rubbing in the win.

There speaks a true sportsman!

Disable chat very wise. 'Online' (correspondence) chess is much better, I found.

Avatar of mezzoforte2

laughing about it when they become aggressive is the best way, I guess

What happened to black's 8th pawn?
