Manners on chess.com

Just pull his leg. Make fun of it. Turn it in a joke. Say it turns you on and that he must be strong and handsome..or whatever. This is the internet. It makes no sense.

I take all insults as compliments. It means you are better than your opponent.

Guy: **** u

Me: haha lol

Hi chess.com fans,

After registering on this website I started to play. On the second game, after winning in a clear manner, my opponent insulted me.

Then the several games followed and I kept receiving such feedback, and only two persons have responded to my gg.

Now I suppose that is because people over here tend to take very seriously these points, that should reflect the strength of play of one.

I guess the solution would be to play unrated, but then there are not many with whom to play... and to turn off the chat seems very rude.

Chess.com shoudl be a great friendly place where people meet to have fun and learn chess related stuff...

Any suggestions? How canwe stop this.

I always type "hello" at the beginning of the game and "gg" after the game. It's not more than 1 out of 5 games where someone will type "hello" back.

At Lichess where there are no repercussions for profanity or abandoning games, I have often typed "hello" at the beginning, recieved no response, then later in the game they typed profanity, or simply abandoned the game when in a losing position despite my "hello".

I think probably a lot of kids and teenagers play chess. They haven't developed the maturity to handle playing board games. It is actually tough to do, sometimes I feel like impulsively swearing at my opponent also but I can restrain myself.

Extreme mistake (imho) right there. Other people want to compliment/help you improve through explaining, and it can only be done through chat. So disabling chat at the start probably won't do you much good :P

Why can't you just take the hanging Q?

Me: haha lol

It reminds you of how funny people are when they try to insult you.

And of course this always backfires:

Offenseive Guy [Lets put that to OG]: **** u

OG: You suck

OG: haha you're so funny

Exactly the reason why this backfires. When you say "haha ur so funny", genrally put it AFTER someone else's comment. When you put it over your own it makes no sense.

How many people laugh at the OG?

I think this unfortunate. I too, would like to see Chess.com a friendly place. There is something that I do that I would like to encourage all of you to do. Whenever I get on Chess.com, I'll welcome a set of new players to the site. I just send them a post: Welcome to Chess.com! or something similar. I enjoy this site very much and there are little things we members can do to make others feel welcomed such as welcoming new members, chatting about the games we play when the other player is open to it, helping others to play better if you can, just to name a few.

I believe that the vast majority of people on this site are friendly. It's just that the less-than-friendlies, while relatively few in number, are far more vocal about it.

I wish I would have seen you when you came on mezzoforte--being in Italy myself I like to welcome Italian players, and if I had seen you, you might have received a "Welcome to Chess.com! (we live in Brugnera) from me.

Hey guys. To be honest the level of maturity on this site is woeful at times. I have been verbally abused both in the forums and in live chat. One guy even threatened to rape my sister in the forums. The worst thing is even though I reported him and sent the forum posts to the site this guy and many like him are still here doing the same thing to other people. I understand that the site must be busy with ths stuff but I think that it still has to do more in the way of discipline. On the other hand I have met some of the nicest people on this site that I talk to regularly. The real problem is you never know what type of person it is untill its too late. I think that the new changes that the site made to pairing people is great. Now all the people that disconnect games are paired together and versa visa. I think that they could go a step farther and put all the people that use profanity and such be paired together aswell.

I have played hundreds of games here and it has been very rare that someone insult me.

Most of the people do not talk at all, and some people act in a very nice way.

But people insulting is very rare actually. I do not care at all about that, actually. Sometimes I may respond them but most of the time I simply ignore them.

The annonymity of the internet affords people the ability to treat people differently than how they would treat them in person.

All you can do is keep on doing what youre doing.  When you run across real idiots report and block them.

This is probably the best advice. I have learned this the hard way though, as im sure I_ am_second will remember the forum new member needs opinions on chess board. That forum is a perfect example of what not to do.

When I'm trying to concentrate I don't want to be distracted with compliments. Chat off solves all problems.

No one is tryig to break your concentration.  A "GL" before your first move (the clock hasnt started yet), and a "GG" when the games over, is not going to break your concentration.

Not everyone is like that mezzoforte.  I have pledged to greet all my opponents at the beginning if the game(s), thank them when the game is over (with out regard to the result), and try to make a new friend from the competition.

You can always turn off "chat" in your games.  Good luck to you.
