Not sure of the details. It's a bit of a lost art. Before ratings the club champ might give you rook odds. Then when you start to win more than lose, knight odds, then pawn odds etc.
Note that the worth of odds doesn't depend on the player giving odds, but the weaker player who is receiving odds.
For example if you give a beginner pawn or even knight odds, it will not affect the win% much because they're going to be dropping that material anyway and giving pawn or knight odds to someone 100 points below you is going to change things drastically.
Kauffman noted through some of his games with students that knight odds was worth about 500 points to an 1800 player. It may only be worth 100 points for near beginners. Sorry I can't help you more, but maybe that will give you some ideas.
Hi, I am trying to come up with a way to fairly put together a social material odds tournament. I am hoping to get a group of social players together. Some play on chess.com so I could use blitz ratings to handicap. I am wondering if there are suggestions for best way to run this type of tournament (or if this type of tourney is even a good idea?) and also roughly what amount of blitz rating is worth a pawn and so forth.
Thanks,
